Legislature Eliminates Wise County School Superintendent

The 61st Legislature ends the office of County School Superintendent in Wise County effective January 1 1971. Remaining duties revert to the County Judge as Ex Officio County School Superintendent with a small expense fund. A December 14 meeting led by County Judge John A. Winger reviewed needs including counseling for schools, board functions, bus decisions, and juvenile delinquency issues.

Salvation Army Fund Drive Surpasses $1,000 Goal

The Salvation Army fund drive closed on Monday December 2 with over 75 participants since its October kickoff breakfast. The campaign aimed at raising $1,000 and met the goal.

Services Held Dec 30 For John Estes Smith

Funeral services for John Estes Smith 34 year Bridgeport resident were held Dec 30 1970 at 3 00 pm in the First Methodist Church of Bridgeport with Brother Del Perkins officiating. Born Oct 17 1912 in Gober Texas he moved to Bridgeport in 1936 and married Ozelle Cuiweill June 12 1938. He helped drill the first oil well in Cuba Community and later worked as a roughneck for oil companies. He was active in the Lions Club Methodist Men and Chamber of Commerce and served as a volunteer firefighter and government grain inspector. He is survived by his wife two children a brother two sisters and four grandchildren. Interment in East Bridgeport Cemetery. Pallbearers Ed Rangle John Lamkin Fred Slay JR Darby Chuck McAfee Ed Cowling.

Brownwood Man Held For Two Local Burglaries

A 31 year old Brownwood man jailed in Brownwood over Bridgeport burglaries. Charged with burglaries at Montford's Jewelry and Western Auto Store. Bond set at $25,000 in each case. Some merchandise recovered. investigation continues as further suspects may be involved.

First National Bank Lobby Hosts Fred Thomas One Man Show

Fred Thomas, a commercial photographer for about twenty years, opens a solo exhibit in the lobby of the First National Bank of Bridgeport starting Monday January 4 1971. The show features forty to fifty prints in 11 by 14 and 16 by 20 sizes, in color and black and white, highlighting varied subjects and a commitment to high quality work. Thomas notes the works have appeared in pamphlets catalogs newspapers and trade journals and recalls prior full time work as a commercial photographer.

Cooke College Sets Deadline For Enrollment

Cooke County Junior College urged enrollment for the spring semester with courses starting in September and continuing weekly. Principal D. E. Jones and Mrs. Novella Denton at Bridge Coat High School can supply details and enrollments must meet a minimum of 15 students per class.
