Texas highway paths proposed to cut pollution and fuel use

A letter argues for Texas to build bicycle paths along state highways as a test to reduce car use and pollution and improve fitness. The suggested starting point is the highway between Bridgeport and Decatur.

Intersection Site Of Three Vehicle Wreck

One person injured in a three vehicle crash at the Hassell and Highway 114 intersection on February 7. Vehicles include a 1969 GMC truck and trailer driven by Ralph Dwayne Stephens 36 Mineral Wells a 1963 one ton truck driven by David White 45 Dallas and a 1969 Buick driven by Mary Conant Creech of Bridgeport. White truck southbound Creech waiting at stop sign. Creech treated and released at Bridgeport Clinic Hospital. Chief Walter Dale and Officer Lloyd Clayton investigated.

Burt Pharmacy Burglary Foiled by Police

Thieves broke into Burt Pharmacy early Thursday and tried to steal medicines and cash. A box of drugs valued around 150 to 200 dollars was found at the back door, with 46.15 missing from the register. A pry bar and screwdriver were left behind and 39 dollars was later recovered on Cates Street. Police credited a late alarm arrival for stopping the break in. Chief Walter Dale labeled the likely burglars as amateurs. Assistant Police Chief Bill Bridges and Officer Lonnie Lane answered the 2:20 a.m. alarm.

Boy Scout Fund Drive In Progress

The Bridgeport Fund Drive for the Boy Scouts of America has collected $343 toward its $1,500 goal. The drive began on Monday and funds will support the 1973 Longhorn Council operating budget providing scouting services. Chairman of the local drive is Gordon Taylor.

Sue Ann Expands Bridgeport Plant to Double Capacity

Sue Ann Inc. announces an April expansion of its Bridgeport women’s sports wear plant. General contractor H. Russell of Bridgeport to oversee the project, completion set for early April. The factory opened October 25 and will add about 50 workers after expansion. Five factories total, with plans under way to buy two more. Local branch manager is Mrs. Azelene Souther. Bridgeport Quarterback Club to meet February 19 at 7:00 p.m. at the high school auditorium to discuss All Sports Banquet plans.

Bridgeport Chamber Eyes Defensive Driving Course

The Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce plans to sponsor an eight hour defensive driving course from the National Safety Council. The program teaches hazard awareness and defensive motorist actions. A 10 percent auto insurance discount is available for each vehicle’s chief driver who completes the course.

Bridgeport March of Dimes Fund Reaches About $500

Bridgeport officials report the March of Dimes fund has added about 50 to reach roughly 500. Campaign director Joe Murphy credits local merchants for recent donations received during the mail out effort. About a quarter of donation letters have been sent with the rest due to go out in two weeks.
