NASA debunks a hoax claiming Mars will appear as large as the full moon during August and September. The real close approach occurs October 30, 2005, at about 69 million kilometers, with Mars brighter than most stars and rising at sunset.
Shoppers in Wise County and across Texas will save on sales tax during the seventh annual tax holiday from Friday 12:01 a.m. to Sunday midnight. Exempt items focus on clothing and footwear with an $8 per $100 savings, though exclusions apply. Athletic wear used nonathletically is exempt only if not worn for its sole purpose. Rentals alterations and accessories are not exempt.
City council approves a 637,500 grant application to fund a 1.275 million Bridgeport Community Center indoor recreation project. The plan, supported by Parks and Recreation Coordinator Anndra Mann, relies on equal matching funds by month end and public park use, amid Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission cuts.
Eight year old Mona Castillo of Bridgeport was scheduled for brain surgery on Tuesday August 2 at 10 a.m. at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth. Her mother Rachel Castillo described pre op MRI, head markings, and hopeful outcomes amid past seizures and a waiting period with new equipment aiding the surgical team.
The 2005 Coal Miners Heritage Festival art contest closes at 5:00 p.m. Thursday August 4. Stevi Roubion 15 of Paradise won the world title in goat-tying at the World Championship Paint Horse Show in Fort Worth on June 30. Crowned queen earlier, she was also named Miss North Texas High School Rodeo Association queen during the 2004-05 season, a honors record for a high school freshman.
Chris Hurst leads Grace Fellowship Church youth ministry in Bridgeport after choosing the role over a Dallas offer. The program has grown from 40 to 100 120 weekly participants with junior high numbers rising rapidly. Hurst manages a five member staff and oversees activities across Wise County including Bridgeport Paradise Decatur Chico and Rhome.
