250 Passengers Rescued From Grounded Sound Vessel
250 passengers aboard the Middletown, en route between Hartford and New York, were saved by row boats and a tug to the Bridgeport after the Middletown grounded off Peck's Island east of Norwalk around 3:30 this morning. Tug boats and a lighter were to pull the vessel free at high tide between 3 and 4 this afternoon. The mostly Italian travelers, returning from Connecticut peach orchards and vacationists to New York, faced no panic as crew and officials coordinated rescue efforts. Captain R. H. Hills led the Middletown. Bridgeport was commanded by Captain Joseph E. Hancart.
