Indianapolis moves avoid mart ial rule as Indiana National Guard troops remain on duty for strike enforcement while arbitration efforts continue. Governor Ralston seeks peaceful settlement with Union and company, with talks involving Central Labor Union officials and public service commission to resolve the streetcar dispute.
Richmond Indiana November 7 The street car service was tied up by a strike of motormen seeking higher pay Inter urban cars continued in operation The Richmond car lines are part of the Terre Haute Indianapolis and Eastern System and it is said the strike at Indianapolis precipitated the walkout here The car company announced an effort would be made to operate the cars later in the day the police are preparing for trouble.
Washington reports the administration currency bill has undergone extensive revision by a coalition of Republicans and Democrats in the Senate Banking Committee. Leaders say a bill acceptable to administration allies could be ready by Monday, prompting a Democratic caucus to consider uniting factions and transferring control from the committee.
Mrs. Katherine V. Simons of Washington will christen the United States torpedo destroyer Downes at Camden New Jersey where the vessel will be launched by the New York Shipbuilding Company. She is a direct descendant of Captain John Downes U S N who served in the Tripoli campaign. The launching is set for Saturday November 8 at 9 30 a m.
Roderick Beers a longtime Bridgeport resident and Civil War veteran who served as a conductor for the New York New Haven and Hartford railroad died at his home after a long illness. Born in Stratford in 1861 he fought in Port Royal Savannah Fort Pulaski and Siege of Petersburg and later led Elias Howe post. He is survived by a son and a daughter and a brother Philo M Beers.
In Willimantic on November 7, testimony in Frank E Howarth's arson case continued with dictagraph recordings from a Brooklyn jail played by widow-detective Mrs Zola Bennett. Readings show Howarth and co defendant Lindley Caine discussing schemes, staying silent, and planning marriages to influence outcomes as the court prepares for further cross examination next week.
On December 31 the terms of city board members will expire across several commissions. Mayor Wilson will not commit to reappointments. Notable expirations include David F Read and Samuel W Baldwin on the sinking fund commission. Frank L Cogill and Malcolm Baxter on the board of commissioners. police commissioners George S Hill and Lou P Bristoll. Dr William J McLaughlin and Fred D Ives on the health board. Rev. Matthew Judge and Rev. J M Richardson on the charities commission. Lawrence J Gill whose tax assessors term ends in July. Thomas F White and William A Lewis on the relief board. John J Morrissey on the appraisal of benefits and damages. Walter B Lashar on paving and sewer. and James Holt Jr Patrick Cuddy and John P Kempile as personal tax collectors. Mayor will not appoint personal tax collectors and will name Howard F Smith, the newly elected tax collector, to collect this tax.
New Orleans reports George E. Crawford of Bridgeport elected president of the National Laundrymen’s Association after three sessions. The Bridgeport businessman helped form Connecticut’s state association and played a key role in national industry growth while serving as Fire Commissioners chairman. He remains active in civic and fraternal circles, celebrating Bridgeport’s progress.
Leslie A. V. Barr, once a member of the Acorn eleven, was granted a divorce from Elizabeth May Barr in superior court for desertion alleged on May 30, 1905. Barr, living at 1045 Brewster Street, said his wife went to Yalesville to visit relatives and did not return. Rose Laughlin of 52 Waldorf testified she wrote to Mrs. Barr at Barr's request to urge her to return but received no reply. The couple married March 13, 1904. the wife's maiden name was Elizabeth Ayres.
Huerta rejects U S demand to remove him and prepares a formal reply. Ambassador Lind rushes to Mexico City to manage the crisis up close. General Felix Diaz, stabbed last night by Pedro Guerrero and later arrested in Havana, is charged with shooting Guerrero. Berlin thinks Huerta will not heed Washington and favors a collective international response with America. Diplomatic Rome sees no aid for the tragedy except intervention.
Lind, arriving from Vera Cruz, arrives in Mexico City to press close negotiations between Mexico and the United States. Huerta reportedly plans a negative response denying any US right to compel his removal and may announce a buildup of the Mexican army to 500000 men.
General Felix Diaz was arrested in Havana today accused of shooting Pedro Guerrero during an altercation in which Diaz was wounded. Guerrero had stabbed Diaz. Diaz claimed he could not explain the incident. Madame Porfirio Diaz reacted emotionally to the news from Paris reporting the attack on Felix Diaz.
John Lind personal representative of President Wilson arrives in Mexico City from Vera Cruz. embassy staff unaware. Lind travels with Capt. Burnside and Ensign Hill. Cabinet meeting discussed US Mexico relations with no definite action. Lind unannounced, poses for photos, noncommittal with reporters.
Stafford Springs Conn Nov 7 One man killed and two seriously hurt when a large auto truck from George B Dewey Co of Hartford overturns on a steep West Stafford hill The dead is Frederick Bird of Hartford Injured are George M Parsons and Henry Peterson of Hartford Both injured men were thrown from the truck and taken to Johnson Hospital Parsons is the more severely hurt with a broken leg cuts and possible internal injuries Peterson suffers cuts and bruises The dead man was removed to a local undertaker's room.
Members of the Boston Chamber of Commerce traveled by special train to Waterbury and Hartford after a grand Algonquin club banquet. Speakers included William T. Collier, George L. Carter, George E. Eames, Samuel B. Vincent Whe, Tews Curtis, Mayor Wilson, and Charles Davis, with Charles Gilman and Carl Noster in attendance. The event fostered friendship and cooperation between Boston and Waterbury.
Rochester officials report that Charib Norbett aged 57 and Frank Tarnich aged 62 were found dead in a room over a store after allegedly eating ham. Authorities suspect ptomaine poisoning as the cause. The victims were residents of Scottville and the incident was noted this morning.
