A well dressed Hungarian Jewish check forger, possibly a New Yorker, passed six forged checks at West End saloons near Hancock Avenue within an hour. Checks drawn on Bridgeport Trust Company ranged from $15 to $19, paid to different saloonkeepers, as patrons described the swift, audacious scam in the Hungarian district. Police traced the culprit’s spree to a vacant lot at 993 Hancock Avenue, where misdirection and a beer run preceded the getaway.
