President Wilson begins his administration with cabinet appointments and a formal meeting, as Josephus Daniels, Lindley M. Garrison, and others join the new government. The Senate receives nominations while aides discuss early policy and guidance for the new era.
President Wilson plans to reappoint Edgar Clark of Town as a member of the Interstate Commerce Commission. Clark had been reappointed by Taft but failed Senate confirmation amid a broader contest over Taft appointments. John H. Marble of California, current secretary of the ICC, will become a member to succeed Franklin K Lane, who moves to the interior department.
Harry M. Jones, known as Uncle Sam's only aerial postman, prepared this afternoon at Gilman field to fly the last leg of his Boston to New York trip. He carried mail for the New York office and several local packages as he did not depart at 3 30.
The fourth Lenten sermon in a series by Jesuit speakers will be delivered at St. Augustine's Church this evening by Rev. Father Oates. The theme is The Truths of Eternity. Father Gates is noted as a leading orator among the order, and a large audience is expected.
London reports Sir Thomas Lipton acts for Royal Ulster Yacht Club to challenge for the America's Cup under the deed of gift, dispatching details to New York aboard the Oceanic. He hopes to build two yachts, may reuse Shamrock IV, and aims for 1914 races with Captain Edward Sycamore and a seasoned crew.
In Bethel on March 5, Mrs. Loren Davis saved her younger child from a blaze that destroyed the Davis home near Putnam Memorial Park in Redding. Ralph Davis, four, perished in the fire, while the rescued child and Mrs. Davis were seriously burned and hospitalized in Danbury.
Hartford welcomes former President William H. Taft with a formal reception by the General Assembly. In Hartford the House passes a resolution. bills amend Bridgeport Health Officer salary and committee appointments for Connecticut Agricultural College trustees. Separately, Taft receives a large greeting in Augusta with students, cadets, and city officials present.
At Helgoland Germany on a night maneuver the torpedo boat destroyer S 178 was rammed by the cruiser Yorck and sank instantly with 64 dead including its commander Lieut Koch and first officer. Fifteen crewmen were saved as rescue boats recovered two officers and 16 crew. Other similar accidents cited include Hessen raid and G 171 collision.
Augusta Maine March 5 Women will not be allowed to vote in Maine for some time at least. The bill for a referendum on a Woman suffrage amendment to the constitution was killed in the House by 89 to 53 after Senate passage. Also a tense exchange occurred in the Raymond murder trial with State's Attorney Slrles Judson and Attorney Howard W Taylor disputing admitted evidence.
Fred Judson, a newcomer to the city, was attacked in the main corridor of the post office. He collapsed after being grabbed and struck, later dying from injuries at St Vincent’s hospital. Police describe two assailants seen near the delivery window. A second victim, Jake Williams of Providence, is treated at St Vincent’s with a probable skull fracture. Williams was arrested at the scene and remanded.
Hartford March 5 State's Attorney Stiles Judann of Fairfield county filed a complaint with the public utilities commission regarding service in Bridgeport. Judson previously declined to emit Perr in a car due to a doubt about parole status. A hearing date is to be fixed. Governor Clark resigns in Jopess Alaska as Walter H. Clack mails his ...
