Large Slide Threatens Panama Canal Western Bank
Panama June 28. Despite excellent channel depth through the Culebra Cut, fears rise that most of the west bank from Contractors Hill to the old Administration Building may slide into the canal prism. A survey shows fissures high on the hillside signaling a long term removal by dredges. The Old Culebra Slide site previously caused alarm over canal completion. Engineers say the movement is surface, not dumping debris, and likely will be resolved in time. Cucaracha and New Culebra Slides are stable with only minor debris removal ongoing.
