Paris June 23 reports continued German offensives on the Aisne front with repeated assaults around Vauxaillon and southeast of Filain. German forces also pressed north of Freidimont but gained no advantage, according to today’s official statement. An American freight steamer was victorious in a battle with a submarine.
Berlin reports a southeast sector along the front near Fajain where armies advanced about 13 kilometres and 300 metres capturing that area. The report, verified via London, notes multiple strong positions changed hands as forces extended their reach on the line.
At Atlantic Port on June 22 a U S freighter repelled a German submarine one day out from Genoa Italy firing on the periscope and torpedo wake. The submarine submerged after four shots, the periscope was struck and the crew reported the sub either sunk or badly damaged. The American vessel suffered no damage.
Charged with beating his mother after entering his home at 948 Hails Jett Street, Andrew Kronas appeared in city court this week. Judge J Frank L. Wilder sentenced him to four months in jail with bonds set at $160.
In a Vienna dispatch to parliament, Austria defense minister reported 136 dead 170 missing and 625 wounded from blasts at Blodwig munitions workshops. Officials cited likely carelessness in a trench mortar factory. Earlier, near Wiener Neustadt 31 miles from Vienna another depot blast injured over 100.
Amid Sebastopol disorders, Pan Russian and peasant congresses back the provisional government. They urge unity against disintegration, reject separate peace, and pledge large Cossack and Ukrainian support to defeat Germany. The Amur, Kuban, and Ukraine delegates claim millions ready to join the army.
Washington June 23 Prohibition 3 a war measure loomed up as the big issue in the House today with a sharp fight promised before a final vote on the food control bill. The contest centered on whether the section authorizing the President to limit regulate or reduce supplies of food materials or feeds used in making alcohol should be changed. Prohibitionists sought a stronger dry provision while favoring wartime grain use restrictions. Senate consideration of the food bill continued as negotiators met to resolve disputed points.
Alfredo Cocchi, the fugitive New York motorcycle dealer, admitted guilt for the murder of 18 year old Ruth Cruger after prolonged interrogation by Judge Zucconi in Bologna. He said jealousy drove him, broke down under pressure, and led to the burial of Cruger’s body in his shop basement. Authorities seek his extradition to the United States to face punishment and to uncover possible accomplices.
Bridgeport surpassed all expectations in the Red Cross fund drive as the city reached 269 368 for the week. The final meeting is set for Monday night at the Stratfield with Rev. John C. Stoddard the speaker. Large gifts included Bryant Electric Co 5 000 and numerous 1 000 donations from Connecticut National Bank Mr and Mrs John T Roche and others.
Stratford reports total Red Cross fund subscriptions reaching 6651 dollars by last evening, collected by team captains and workers. Enthusiasm at a society meeting foresees final returns by Monday evening as Stratford continues fundraising efforts.

Two men of draft age were arrested for drunkenness on Water Street. James Farrell, booked with no registration card, claimed to be over 31 but records show 28. Judge Frank Wilder sentenced him to five days in jail. George Kenney of New Jersey registered May 21 in his home state and did not receive a card. he received five days in jail. Police will notify federal agents.
Washington June 23 regulations for drafting the new army await President Wilson's approval. The government will draft by numbers, using a central system in Washington to avoid local influence. Exemptions handled by local boards, with drafted men reporting to cantonments by September 1 or soon after.
Capt E O Cronan recommended release to Judge Frank L Wilder after Mrs Joseph Scalzi of 654 Maple Street was arrested yesterday on burglary charges. Accused of entering friend Mrs Theresa Ianucci at 315 Hollister Avenue to steal wearing apparel. Cronan said she was mentally unbalanced and relatives would care for her.
Connecticut counties form citizen committees to boost National Recruiting Week from June 23 to 30. Men 18 to 40, unmarried, are urged to enlist to push total volunteers toward 70 000, with officials hoping for as many as 100 000 before July 1.
Arthur Burns four years old of 17 Milne street died at St Vincent's hospital after an auto driven by James Buckley 770 Broad street struck him this morning. Buckley says the boy darted from behind an ice wagon and that he stopped within 30 feet but the rupture of the stomach proved fatal despite immediate operation. The National Bank of Argentina defeats the Federal Reserve Board as its US representative.
