New High School Graduates First Commencement in New Building
The Bridgeport High School class of 1916, the largest yet, graduated in the new building with 31 Magna Cum Laude and numerous honors. President Elmer H. Havens presided as Supt. Slawson spoke, Miss Beard won first prize and Miss Marsh second in an essay contest, and Jacob Dold and others received prizes. Principal remarks praised the facilities, teachers, and students as the first class to hold commencement in the new auditorium and to receive diplomas from Mr. Slawson.

Florence Nightingale and Jeanne d Arc in Heroic Light
A reverent portrait celebrates Florence Nightingale as the radiant Angel of the Crimea and Jeanne d Arc as France’s Virgin of Orleans. The essay traces Nightingale’s selfless nursing, hospital reform, and humility after the Crimean War, and extols Joan of Arc as a stainless example of heroism who united a broken nation. The piece contrasts 19th century sainthood with medieval courage, urging admiration for enduring personal virtue over public fame.

The Romance of Synthetic Chemistry
A compact, dated meditation on the evolution of chemistry from alchemy to synthetic chemistry. It traces the shift from futile aims to destructive analysis and eventual constructive synthesis, highlighting Wohler’s 1828 breakthrough and the practical value of artificial production of organic substances and dyes.
