Erosion Rates Reveal Nationwide Soil Loss From Rivers
USGS investigations show the United States loses about one inch of surface annually every 760 years. Major rivers like the Mississippi Ohio Missouri and Colorado carry vast amounts of dissolved and suspended matter to the sea, totaling hundreds of millions of tons yearly and equating to hundreds of millions of cubic yards of soil. If focused on the Isthmus of Panama, erosion could have carved an 85 foot canal in 3, 000 days.
