Bridgeport banks reported a massive late rush as small subscribers flocked to buy Liberty Bonds. Total subscriptions exceeded quotas across local banks and firms, with City National, Connecticut National, and Bridgeport Savings among top contributors. Subscriptions from major employers and city firms pushed Hartford region totals above the 12 million allotment, while national banks shifted large sums to reach final counts.
Mrs Catherine Penny 22 of 10 Vincellette Street died at St Vincent's hospital after attempting to start a wood fire with kerosene. Fire enveloped her garments, neighbors aided with blankets, and Dr I Aranki attended before she died this morning. Penny was wife of Bert Penny and had a changed name Peet.
The British armed merchant cruiser Avenger was torpedoed and sunk in the North Sea on Wednesday night with all but one saved. Reports from Copenhagen via Central News list additional Norwegian vessels sunk or damaged including Carmet Vinalas Bylvia and Candace with crews rescued or missing as noted by the Norwegian foreign office.
French losses for the week ending June 14 include four ships over 1,600 tons sunk by mine or submarine, one smaller vessel, and three fishing boats. Six ships were attacked unsuccessfully, while 1,004 vessels entered and 1,015 left French ports.
Berlin reports the German forces retiring at two points on the Belgian front. The Germans were pressed back by the British between Hollebeke and the Douve river region, and southwest of Warneton, according to today’s official statement.

Prominent financier Henry Davidson urges public sacrifice and support for allies through the Red Cross.
W B Ferguson, Remington Armory production engineer and Navy constructor graduate, resigns to become president and general manager of Bayles Shipbuilding Co Inc in Port Jefferson Long Island. He plans to expand the yard for large scale shipbuilding while continuing yacht work. Ferguson brothers include Homer Ferguson, president of Newport News Shipbuilding, and Major Harley Ferguson in the Army Engineer Corps.
Bridgeport Machinists union proposes a five story cooperative building costing about 150000 dollars. Ground floor would host barber shop restaurant printing plant and grocery store. upper floors include offices reading rooms trade school and gymnasium. a roof garden would cap the structure. The plan includes funded raising to avoid depleting treasury. A trade school would teach machinists' trade to apprentices outside shop hours, limited to workers in factories.
A stereopticon presentation of the Passion play will be shown at St Thomas church Fairfield Sunday at 3 PM for children and 8 PM for adults. A school fund dance will be held at St Thomas hall Tuesday evening June 26. Likely fair tonight and Saturday with cooler conditions and light to moderate northwest winds.
Waivers were approved for the board of contract and supply to buy a carload of white clipped oats from Vincent Brothers at 1710 without bids due to grain market fluctuations. The health department exchange of two Ford touring cars and purchase of two new cars for 421.50 were also approved.
Paris June 15 French military aviators wowed Gen Pershing with daring spirals loops and other maneuvers showing mastery and disregard for danger. Pershing spent a social day then planned to proceed to the front and discuss work with Painleve and Lacaze as reporters gathered details about his visit.
Paris dispatch reports French editors debating how to say Pershing’s name with La Liberte proposing Perechic meaning gallant father or Perecher meaning dear father as the best solution.
President Wilson signed today a 33 billion war budget bill, the largest single appropriation by any government. The measure funds the new army and other war preparations, marking a historic peak in wartime spending.
Montevideo Uruguay June 15 the senate decided that if American warships visit Uruguay they will be treated as non belligerent. Uruguay’s neutrality decree in the war between the United States and Germany shows sympathy with the United States action. Warships rated as belligerent would be allowed in port for only 24 hours and would be limited in supplies they could take aboard.
Copies of the new city manager charter for a special election on Saturday August 11 were mailed to 20,000 voters. Postage on the charter amounted to 600 dollars.
London reports renewed British advances near Messines and along the Ypres Comines canal. Troops now hold German trenches from the Lys to the Warnave, advancing seven miles and pushing 500 to 1,000 yards. Over 150 prisoners, one howitzer, and seven machine guns were captured. a raid north of Lens yielded German casualties and several prisoners.
In Verdun sector near hill 304 and the Meuse heights German reconnoitering parties were dispersed by French fire. Artillery fighting continued overnight with engagements near Hurtebise Cragnne Jovencourt and in Chevaliers wood and Bioncourt area.
From the French front near the Oise and Chemin des Dames, American and French aviators fly over German lines to observe troop movements amid heavy artillery. The shelters in St Gobain forest hinder view, but indications show Germany preparing intermediate works and possible retirement under French pressure.
Vera Bailey Wyckoff secures a divorce on cruelty grounds from Spofford F. Wyckoff a Stamford manufacturer after three days of conferences. She receives 2000 alimony within a week and 83.33 a month for life while unmarried. Custody to the wife with limited visitation for the child. She drops a 100000 alienation suit against her mother in law Anna Mitchell.
Captain Quartermaster J Alex H Robinson of the Connecticut Home Guard is delivering company equipment today to Norwalk Stamford and Greenwich. Additional equipment for Bridgeport companies has also arrived.
Probate Judge Miller set a 10 o'clock morning hearing for June 26 on Mrs. Anna Dewey's request from Connecticut Avenue for the return of her child, who had been committed earlier to a New Haven institution.
London June 15 More than 100 000 prisoners have been taken by the British in the war James Ian MacPherson parliamentary secretary to the war office announced in the house of commons. Up to the end of May 70067 prisoners were taken on the western front to which must be added at least 8000 for June. In Mesopotamia 10300 prisoners have been taken since July 1 1916 and in Egypt about 8739. Western front guns captured since July 1 1916 total 434. In Mesopotamia 122 guns and in Egypt 18. Territory regained on the western front since July 1 1916 amounts to zero square miles.
Mrs Spottswood D Bowers wife of eminent attorney died early this morning in Syracuse New York after a minor operation. She had been staying in Bridgeport during recent months and her passing shocks local social circles. A new Stratfield home facing Brooklawn Club will mourn as will Syracuse where the husband races to reach her. The operation was deemed minor by New York specialists and was expected to relieve her illness. Continued on page seven.
