War Interferes With French Cod Fishing Fleet
Paris reports that the blessing ceremony for the spring cod fishing fleets has lost some of its spectacle as war reduces the fleets. About 100 vessels from Fecamp Paimpol Saint Malo Cancale Saint Servan and Gramwille sail this year down from 309 before the war. Steam trawlers were requisitioned and many crewmen mobilized. This year 3000 mobilized men have been granted army leave to prevent disaster to the industry. The cod catch will be much smaller than average though Cancale oysters will be plentiful as women take over the seed oyster harvest despite heavy ships and hard work.
