Allied dispatches report British forces penetrating German positions south of the Somme river with over half a mile of advance. Heavy German casualties follow a strong British counterattack across the new front, with operations extending north of La Basse.
In the Roche Veseth near St. Quentin and along the Chemin des Dames German efforts intensified at several points from positions south of Filsin to east of Cerny. Artillery fought fiercely as four trench assaults northeast of Cerny were driven off, two north of Froidmont repelled, and detachments southeast of Corbeny and near Chevallier wood were pushed back with prisoners taken including an officer.
German war department reports fresh fighting near Ypres Comp Canal and Douve lowlands but says British positions from La Bassee canal to Bassee brook were held. Official statement notes no advantage gained by British forces.

In Springfield Missouri on June 3 the body of Lloyd Keet a 14 month old son of banker J Holland Keet was found in a well on the Crenshaw farm. Suboperators reported the discovery and the source of their information was not disclosed. The finding was telephoned to the local newspaper.
New Haven June 9 the state's Regular Army quota remains 1 380 short with 848 men secured of 2 228 by noon today. The daily average needed to reach the quota by June 30 is 77. Fifteen men enlisted today, six from Waterbury.
William A Read and Lillian J McAvoy both 23 of 455 East Main street obtained a marriage license. Stephen J Vane 23 of 267 Hallam street and Verona Ziter 21 of 149 Hallem street also secured licenses.
Factory whistles church bells and fire horns will sound at 10 o clock to wake residents for the Liberty bond subscription. Bridgeport must mobilize funds to reach 35 million, with 32,246 already pledged. June 15 Friday is the deadline. Booths will open Monday outside banks to guide buyers. Howard Speer of Hincks Bros. will address workers at the American Chain and Bryant factories, with a Plaza talk tonight. United church has boosted its campaign from 7,000 to 13,000. Branch 2 of the National Gymnastic Sokol union reports 1,000 pledged.
The Department of Justice office in the federal building on Broad Street reports four hundred registered alien enemies in Bridgeport. Many workers without employer endorsement remain unregistered and will be barred from restricted city zones if regulations are enforced, requiring all aliens to secure permits today.
