Wood pulp supply strained as spruce imports rise
Washington reports 251 US pulp mills used 3,346,106 cords of wood to produce 2,118,947 tons of pulp in 1908. Spruce supplied 64 percent, with Canada imports at 45 percent of domestic spruce. Hemlock and poplar remain key locally sourced woods, while rugged costs rose to an average $3.38 per cord overall and $10.60 for imported spruce, reflecting tighter supply and a shift to sawmill waste.
