John T King arrives in Bridgeport after Europe trip stirring calm with admonitions and cheer. He defends his political role, criticizes newspaper fairies, promises continued activity, and paints a broad scene of civic benefits before weather turns rainy and windy.
Rev F A Dillingham of the First Universalist church met Mayor Wilson in a private half hour audience. When pressed about the purpose he replied it is too hot to talk. The visit sparked rumors that the Pastors Association will back Wilson if he seeks another term.
Reports from Peking note Hu Nan seceded from the central government on July 25, with Hu Pei and Kiang Si forces on the border. Li Yuen Ching says his units can handle revolts in Kiang Si and Hu Nan, but defections near Wu Chang complicate loyalties. Several southern provinces stay loyal despite rebel pressure while Hengnan holds a strategic position. Hostilities continue along Sin-Kiang Turkesan.
Washington July 23. A joint congressional committee would study Mexican conditions, examining diplomatic correspondence and making related documents. Ambassador Henry Lane Wilson resumed talks with Secretary Bryan on the Mexican situation and may appear before the Senate foreign relations committee to share his views. No steps expected until Mexican leaders finalize a plan to seek peace. talks continue with hopes Huerta may resign. no names revealed yet.
Bridgeport and other Connecticut towns tighten marriage rules after August 1. Nonresidents must wait five days for licenses unless a judge of probate approves urgent marriage. Minor consent rules and penalties for improper issuance are outlined in the act. Town clerks received official copies from the secretary of state.
A notice states that the certificate received shall incur a fine not exceeding one hundred dollars. Section 4535 of the general statutes is repealed by approval dated June 6, 1913.
Mrs Julia Watt Morris Lawrence, noted for multiple marriages and lawsuits, faces a $1000 suit from John Carpenter of the St Auto Co. Her Fairfield summer home on 13.5 acres has been attached as security. Carpenter claims the money is for auto repairs. Returnable to the common pleas court at the September term.
Detective Sergeant Howard Cronan brought Harry Harris into custody after he arrived in the city this morning. Harris faces an embezzlement charge by American Graetzen Light Company and requested a continuance to Friday for full evidence. He said he wandered from Meriden to Boston, working in a hotel kitchen, and wrote his wife he would return by August 1. He allegedly diverted about $105 in cash and contracts during his employment.
Charles Murray of South Norwalk sues Jobson-Gifford Co. of New York for $2000 in Superior Court to recover for injuries while working on electrification of the New Haven road. He alleges March 17 he was injured when assisting bolts in excavations, crushing his left hand, with medical care and loss of use. The suit accuses the firm of negligence for improper tools.
Ambulance records for the month have broken high water marks with 146 calls by noon today. This surpasses the entire month of June and indicates rising daily demand for emergency treatment. Physicians attending believe weather barely affects emergencies and public awareness of quick care saves lives, while the public often overestimates case severity.
Prof Charles F Marvin named Chief of the Weather Bureau to succeed Willis L Moore. Marvin, former head of the instrument division, joined the signal service in 1884 from Ohio. President Wilson to nominate to Senate this week. Expect changes to emphasize weather reports for agriculture and farming nationwide. Marvin invented many bureau instruments and has spoken at meteorological congresses.
After months of conflict at the Coe Stapley plant the dispute appears close to settlement. National Secretary John Fitzpatrick of the International Brass Buffers and Polishers association says nonunion machinists and detectives have been discharged. the commissary and boarding facilities closed. the cook departed yesterday. He notes readiness to strike again if needed, but expects a settlement or factory closure unless arbitration is accepted. Factory heads remain silent.
Reports from Lima and Santiago churned with claims of a great disaster but were contradicted by later dispatches. Authorities noted no catastrophe, only political turmoil including a bomb at the Senate Speaker's residence and clashes that led to arrests. Wires between Chile and Peru were interrupted, delaying details.
Defining July 29 report says convict squad No. 2 of sixty prisoners left Sing Sing for Auburn with no outcry beyond cheers. Armed guards led the line. prisoners were shackled in pairs, waves caps at photographers, and chatted as they rode. Warden Clancy says subordination is devitalized and incendiary identity is known amid ongoing fire investigations.
New York July 29 A theft at Narragansett Pier reports gems valued at 75 000 including a rope of pearls worth 60 000 stolen from Mrs C C Rumsey daughter of the late E H Harriman. Robbery occurred between Saturday night eight and Sunday night. Private detectives to handle case. police not yet informed.
The Huerta government ordered the release of Americans Charles Bissell and Bernard McDonald two mine managers sentenced to death in Chihuahua. Charge dAffaires Algara confirmed to Secretary Bryan the release and said the chauffeur also is freed. They were captured by Gen Orozco while trying to move American refugees from Parral. Lloyd Williamson, five, and ten, was committed to the county home in Norwalk by Judge Hallen.
Michael Maturo, about 35, boss of the Westbrook section gang, was struck and killed by a west bound freight train in Westbrook Connecticut this morning as he worked with an adze on ties. The rest of the gang saw the approaching train and called to him but he did not hear. His family lives in Westbrook and he previously lived in Madison. He had worked for the railroad in various roles for several years.
Millard M. Polk a 73 year old resident of Conantville was found drowned in Echo Lake near here during the night. He was last seen sitting on the shore and authorities consider the drowning an accident. Polk was unmarried.
Washington July 29 Majority Leader Oscar W Underwood denounced lobbyist Martin M Mulhall as a liar and blackmailer after Mulhall testified he had conversations with Underwood about legislation. Underwood insisted he never spoke to Mulhall and condemned the charges as false, leaving the committee room amid a heated exchange.
New Haven Connecticut announces the annual outing and field day of the Connecticut Society Sons of the American Revolution to be held at Momauquin on the city’s east shore. After a 2 p.m. dinner, Rev William De Loss Love of Hartford and others will speak. President Wilson H. Lee will preside. Members discuss making the Hale Homestead in South Coventry a patriotic pilgrimage site.
Hartford news reports John B. Legert, a city fire department driver, arrested on perjury charges tied to a marriage license. Legert, held on a $300 bond, allegedly falsely stated bride-to-be Mabel Beatrice Cline was 21 when she was 13. The mother of the girl filed the complaint leading to the warrant.
Judge Scott of the court of common pleas ruled in favor of Gerardo Paterno in a boundary dispute with James Doolan over a barn encroachment on Frank street. Doolan sought $200 in damages while noting 15 years of use by Paterno. Separately four year old Otto Kress suffered a compound fracture of the right arm after falling from a porch steps, treated by Dr. William H. Curley and sent to St. Vincent's hospital.

A Bridgeport man who left a hospital after a head injury is said to have wandered dazed on the street and pleaded to be readmitted. Doctors fear a skull fracture from a blow when he was struck while riding a freight car. Ambulance crews transported him back to hospital for evaluation. Concurrently, city paving crews begin laying a concrete foundation and granite block paving on Garum Avenue and nearby streets, with Mayor Wilson approving permanent pavers from Clinton Avenue to State Street junction and Warren pavement on Fairfield Avenue serving Black Rock.
Papers were filed in the superior court today in the divorce suit of Gertrude Parker of Huntington against Charles E Parker of Norwalk, dated December 1949. The couple married June 12, 1904. Mrs Parker seeks permission to resume her maiden name Gertrude dates.
