Reports from Rome Naples Messina Cosensa describe torrential rain hail floods and mudslides causing crop loss and evacuations. Cold winds and snow in the Alps add to widespread storm distress across the country.
Bridgeport laboring men plan to march in a July 13 parade at Stratford for St James church cornerstone rites. Central Labor Union carpenters joiners masons and bricklayers will be represented with Coast Artillery band. Parade leaves from Central Labor Union hall at 1 pm and travels to Stratford by special cars.
In a morning hearing at Bishop Street, witnesses testified motorman could see Peter H. Cole from over 100 feet, contradicting earlier claims that cars blocked his view. Evidence suggested oil tracks contributed to the Connecticut Company accident on Conduit tracks. efforts to fix blame to be pursued.
Washington July 11 Speaker Clark repudiated links to Lamar and Lauterbach in a Senate inquiry. Witnesses described a $20,000 fund and a $5,000 gift to S. N. D. North while Clark asserted he never knew or communicated with Lamar Lauterbach or Morgan & Co. He did acknowledge meeting Lauterbach briefly in Washington years ago and denied further dealings.
New York July 11 The federal grand jury continued its Lamar probe under the impersonation statute. Witnesses included Paul Cravath testifying about the Union Pacific conspiracy and senators Stone and reps Palmer Riordan. Early testimony featured George F. Baker and lawyer J Sergent Cram tied to Lamar and Lauterbach in Steel involvement.
Coroner Phelan ruled the death of Winetta Benedict, wife of New York millionaire James A. Benedict, accidental after a racing car overturned near Danbury on July 3. The couple, who had married less than two weeks, were traveling at 60 to 70 mph on an elongated curve when tire failure and a ditch plunge led to a fatal impact. The coroner noted Benedict’s wife enjoyed high speed rides and found she was a voluntary passenger under the law.
A 10 year old boy, John Kerwin, was set ablaze while near a bonfire when a breeze fanned flames. Neighbor John Standish risked himself to tear off the burning clothing and carry the boy to safety and medical aid. Dr Krasnye treated the boy at home before hospital care.
Bridgeport police report Bert McLain a local barber arrested on grand larceny charges by New York authorities has been convicted. The New York courts sentenced him to one year in prison, information relayed by Detective John J. Sullivan and Patrolman John E. Barton during Sullivan's visit.
Across Main Street many stores plan moves as rents and property values rise. Radford B. Smith will relocate to Broad Street Fairfield Avenue while George B. Clark develops a remodeled building on Broad and Fairfield. Multiple tenants and firms eye Main Street vacancies as Broad Street gains prominence as the retail hub.
Two street musicians played in front of City Hall as the motto about music from Shakespeare echoes with the city fathers. One performer chased by a cop after the two hand organs struck up together, blending airs from opera and musical theatre.
Coroner John J. Phelan welcomed a New Haven road correction after Edward G. Riggs issued a retraction regarding a July bulletin that accused politicians of pressing the coroner to fix responsibility for the Stamford wreck. The commission found the rail line remiss and officials withdrew the charge.
In Nottingham the American pair McLoughlin and Hackett defeated Germany 6-4 2-6 6-3 8-6 to win the doubles 3 sets to 1. The U S will meet the Canadian-Belgian winners next in the final round. In Folkestone Powell and Schwengers beat Watson and Du Vivier 6-2 6-2 6-? to qualify the Canadians for the final round.
Meriden Conn July 11 Manager T J Whelan of the former Holyoke Eastern Association Baseball club announced receipt of word from President O Rourke that the directors have sanctioned transferring the team from Holyoke to Meriden.
James J. Kerwin Fairfield Avenue dealer loses to John D. Slady in a Court of Common Pleas ruling. Judge Scott awards Slady 694.52 for a May agreement to buy a Halladay roadster and a failed plan to sell Slady’s Overland for 300 before June 1 1911.
Connecticut Public Utilities Commission reports engineer Charles J. Doherty’s limited experience as the immediate cause of the June 12 Stamford accident on the New York New Haven and Hartford Railroad. It notes the railroad's ultimate responsibility for train safety and urges tougher engineer qualification rules and exams.
