A fierce snowstorm blankets the region delaying railroad and trolley traffic and halting holiday shopping. Police report heavy snowfall with near foot totals, drifting in places, and a colder forecast for tomorrow. Local snow cleanup crews operate at dawn and throughout the morning to keep streets passable for Christmas shoppers.
A heavy snowstorm blankets Connecticut disrupting railroads and delaying intercity travel as New Haven reports widespread snowfall. Across the region six inches had fallen by late morning, with drifting winds complicating commutes and shore traffic affected along the New Jersey coast. The storm disrupted trolley and surface transit, while workers earned extra income clearing streets amid icy pavements.
The United Fruit steamer Turriatba with about 60 passengers and 100 crew ran aground on sands near the Jersey coast amid a blizzard and high seas. Lifesavers from two stations stand by as wrecking tugs rush from New York to attempt to refloat the vessel. Under the new plan effective January 1 clerks with up to five years of service receive passes only to and from home if they work outside their town. At five years they may travel within their division, and after 15 years a pass on the entire system is allowed, with a wife’s pass for married men. Passes are issued annually.
Bridgeport officials worry as the steamer Naugatuck left last midnight with a Christmas cargo and many passengers and had not docked in New York by noon. Telephones failed to locate the vessel and officials fear it is making little headway in the storm. The Port Jefferson steamer also did not run, awaiting better weather. No accidents were reported on local waters by noon today.
New York December 24 Police and three men charged with blackmail were brought before Judge O Sullivan to plead to a bribery indictment. They pled not guilty through counsel Louis Grant and asked to amend or withdraw later, bail set at 2500 each, immediately posted, men released. The Farmer notes its annual Christmas greeting, wishing readers and citizens best wishes this season.

Sullivan is known in Hartford county and previously in reform school and county jail.
Tokyo reports an assassin attacked Field Marshal Artamo Yamagata at his Sekiguchi Koshikawa home Monday night. The would be killer, captured after injuring himself, swallowed morphine and survived with medical help. He has been jailed as news of the incident spread. The Bridgeport Trust Company will stay open 8 to 10 this evening for public convenience.
Formal not guilty pleas entered in a U S district court in New York on indictments of criminal conspiracy in restraint of foreign and interstate commerce. Charles S Mellen head of New Haven Railroad and E J Chamberlin of Grand Trunk were released on $10,000 bail each after appearing before Judge Hough. Mellen showed signs of agitation in court as bail was posted and both men waited through another case in progress before their own hearings.
John Weinstein a 67 year old cigar maker from Bridgeport was found this morning in bed with the gas on. Neighbors and friends from New Haven credited with saving his life by timely discovery and doctors at St Vincent's hospital began prolonged respiration attempts. He had planned to distribute calendars via his union, and his ties to the Cigarmakers' Union are noted as a reason for possible rescue efforts.
