Two complaints have been lodged with the local prosecuting officers regarding the sale of imitation butter by restauranteurs and are now under advisement for prosecution. This follows an inspection by Food and Dairy Commissioner Potter, who leads an active crusade against imitation butter and oleomargarine. There were 27 licensed oleomargarine dealers in May, rising to 250 now, as enforcement tightens under the renovated butter law. Two cases are in Bridgeport and others in smaller towns. Two workers began inspections late last year, covering Fairfield and New Haven counties. One Naugatuck firm faces prosecution for selling illegal lemon extract. Adulteration of molasses has declined, but more vinegar below standard is found.
E. G. Buckland vice president of the New York New Haven Hartford Railway ordered a $1,500 bond for the release of Motorman Louis Peterson after manslaughter charges tied to a Stratford trolley collision that killed Mrs. Jessica Saunders and involved a Yale student party. Buckland said the company would cover the bond after legal talks and emphasized relief for its employee.
Clifford H. Brigham, 48, unmarried, shot himself in the head at daybreak after weeks of heavy losses and a two week disappearance. He resided near Raven Stream road house in Stratford and was taken to Bridgeport hospital in critical condition. Motil, his employer, notified Brigham's Boston relatives who planned to travel immediately.
In Criminal Superior Court Brooklyn singer John R Carroll faces possible state prison time for bringing 18 year old Ruth Dressel to the city and aiding her exposure to the underworld at Frank Herman's Bank Street place. Miss Dressel testified she met Carroll at a Brooklyn wedding party and met him daily thereafter. he claimed to be single but later said his wife sought a divorce. Carroll’s counsel is William W Bent, with State’s Attorney Alexander J Delaney and Galen Carter leading the case. Frank Herman, convicted dive keeper, was fined and jailed. his brothel closed and liquor license forfeited. Dressel was committed to the House of the Good Shepherd in Hartford.
Vice President EB Buckland of a Connecticut company arrived in Bridgeport to meet Mayor Buckingham and Supt C H Chapman. He announced a special force will focus on ventilation and heating of cars, possible ordinances if passengers interfere, and plans to use red signs for crowded trains plus painted stop poles and new track cars. A broken cable blamed on dredging barges at Stratford Avenue bridge.
William Fogo, a clerk at the American Graphophone Co., was granted a divorce from Bella Frances Fogo in the Superior court on grounds of desertion. The couple wed in June 1903 and lived apart since May 1906 after disputes over temper and drinking. The decree cited desertion as the basis for relief.
Mt Vernon police detain Mary Morris and William H Maby over an elopement. The aged widow and former militia officer planned a marriage of convenience to ease Maby’s business role, but authorities pursued a vagrancy charge amid questions of her conservatorship and her finances.
New York city reports banker Charles A. Belling of the Bronx National Bank is charged with securing 25000 from several banks using forged stock and with 5500 spent on "automobile joy rides" in a year. Treated as insane, he is held at the Tombs as Dr George Parker reviews his lunacy after a skull fracture and a history of speed mania and fearless driving amid high speed orders.
