A bomb from an express package exploded at an uptown betting works killing Ida Anusewitz a 13 year old employee and injuring two men. The device addressed to Thomas McCabe detonated as workers opened it shattering glass and tearing the floor. Police suspect dynamite and link the blast to recent layoffs by proprietor William H. Callanan.
Florence reports the Leonardo da Vinci masterpiece Mona Lisa or La Joconde has been recovered. An Italian man, alleged thief, was arrested. the theft had shocked the art world since August. The painting was located in the city.
Eugene Bletcher Pickett, a presumed New Maven man, was found nearly frozen to death at Harbor View Beach near South Norwalk. He is in precarious condition at a local hospital and doctors fear amputation of both feet may be required.

The New York New Haven Hartford Railroad shares fell to a new low on the stock exchange reaching 66 3 8 before 1 pm today. The previous record had stood at 66 5 8.
The battleship Vermont, returning from a Mediterranean cruise, has a broken starboard main shaft and flooded compartments. She sails toward Hampton Roads under convoy, about 1 200 miles from Hampton Roads and 600 miles from Bermuda after the 3 45 p m incident yesterday.
Albert C. Hermann of Stratford received a divorce from Bertha Hermann in superior court this afternoon on desertion grounds dating from 1908. Hermann, an assistant foreman at the U M C, testified his wife was not home loving and neglected their meals. They married in 1907. Rose Kapmeyer was granted a decree from John A. Kapmeyer on grounds of intolerable cruelty and desertion. She said he failed to support her and often struck her. he was arrested in March 1908 for breaking down a door and did not return to the home. The couple wed August 9, 1881.
Waterbury December 12 In superior court Judge Burpee refused to order the receivers of the New England Watch Company to sell 13 000 series C watches at once as demanded by creditors committee. Receivers say a sale now would incur a loss. A recent meeting of creditors committee and receivers failed to finalize a reorganization plan.
In Paterson New Jersey on December 12 probate proceedings named James A Meahan as executor for Johanna Donovan with P J Carroll and William Heaphy as appraisers. The life use of about 3500 dollars at 405 Atlantic street goes to children John Henry Donovan and Josephine Donovan Maloney with division among grandchildren after their deaths. No smoking on rear platforms cited as a public note.
A coroner's physician opened an inquiry into the death of Mrs Helen L Mackay widow of Rev Donald Sage Mackay longtime pastor at the Collegiate Church of St Nicholas New York. She died after ether anesthesia during a private hospital examination identified by a handwritten name and address in her handbag. Ether was given at her request to aid the exam and heart failure under anesthesia was listed as the cause. She was daughter of the late Gregor Smith and her husband Dr Mackay died in 1908.
The Hotel Tremont bar room closed in Middle street after years in business. Proprietor Henry O Rourke faces city court action for selling liquor without a license but plans a move and, with LaCroix and Anderson, will obtain a transfer of the license under an agreed arrangement. The agreement was reached with liquor prosecutor A J Merritt and Attorney Henry Greenstein.
William Kenton died at Hartford hospital after slashing his throat with a razor in a personal crisis. He came home from work on Thursday, gave his pay envelope to his wife, then went to the cellar and killed himself. His wife was alerted by groans.
Bristol Connecticut December 12 Armand Vio ville aged 13 and Joseph Kolopsensky aged 15 were arrested today charged with breaking into the public library last Wednesday night and robbing the safe of a sum of money. They are held without bonds for trial tomorrow.
Samuel Weinstein of 2 Grand Street was cut by a razor-like knife while cutting veal at his market this afternoon. The wound severed the right femoral artery and he lost blood before emergency crews arrived. A rapid transport to Bridgeport Hospital followed due to difficult tourniquet application.

An announcement was made today. The new $10,000 Waterous gasoline pumping fire engine went into service at 2 PM at Bridgeport Fire Department No. 3 on Norman Street, replacing the horse drawn engine.
Vera Cruz, Dec. 13. Rebel forces attacking Tampico were driven away from the city with heavy loss. General Gustee Maze, military commander, says federal troops under General Joacquin Maas Jr. arrived to the defense of Tampico yesterday.
In Presidio Texas on December 12 the situation around Ojinaga Mexico shows federal troops concentrated and awaiting a rebel assault. Rebels reportedly grow outside the village while reinforcements from Chihuahua reach the area. Federals expect to move with supplies from the United States as Ojinaga’s population surges and makeshift shelters arise.
Arthur T. Bradley of Meriden pleads guilty in the Connecticut Superior Court to manslaughter connected with a trolley car collision with a train on the New York, New Haven & Hartford line near Weetield in October. He receives a three month jail term after a plea change from not guilty to guilty.
