Redshaw 65 a longtime Singer Mfg Co executive from 401 Noble Ave Bridgeport died after an accident at the plant He walked into an open elevator shaft from the first floor and plunged to the basement floor His skull and spinal column were fractured and he died at Bridgeport Hospital Dr J F Keegan and factory staff aided him Redshaw a 45 year employee was well known in Bridgeport and Ansonia where his brother Samuel Redshaw lives His wife had died years ago
Attorney Robert G. DeForest of this city was named Public Defender of the criminal superior court. Recommended by State's Attorney Homer S. Cummings, he will assist prisoners without counsel. The post, created to replace appointed servant lawyers, begins with the next court term and may be extended. DeForest is a noted local lawyer and Democratic figure. The court convenes next month.
Detectives seek three men after a barber was struck and injured near South Avenue Main Street. He drew a revolver in self defense when attacked, then the assailants fled. The wounded man was treated at St Vincent's hospital and police pursue identification. Hugh F. Keegan faces $250 suit over an unpaid note to Erwin M. Jennings Co. An attached Keegan car is tied to the case.
Newtown August 22 Revenge for ignominy in Western roping contests came from a Berkshire heifer that roped and dragged George Robinson a score of yards, breaking two ribs as it circled him then pranced off across the field.
The district board announces a stringent second batch of exemption decisions. Of 39 claims, 18 were denied and 21 granted temporary exemptions. Denied include George L. Warren head of Bridgeport Red Cross civilian relief and Edward J. Redgate son of Police Superintendent John H. Redgate. Two local appellants from Bridgeport were remanded after physician findings. Judge Walsh remarks that absolute exemptions are scarce and require essential employer need.
The district board community session reviewed exemption requests and approved specific relief for eligible cases. Officials clarified criteria, timelines, and appeal options while outlining procedures for future submissions.
Two certified lists from the third and sixth local divisions reach the district board, advancing the city toward completing its national army quota. Washington August 22 a full statistical report on the operations of the draft law will be prepared by the provisional marshal general office as soon as the mobilization of the first increment of 687000 men of the new army has been completed some time early in October. Pending the preparation of the report and careful analysis of the conditions it discloses no steps toward calling a second increment to the eligors will be taken. Gen Crowder said today that the call for the second increment never had been considered at any conference he was present. The first increment will fill all the training areas 16 national guard camps and 16 national army cantonments to capacity. The regulars are now 12000 above full authorized war strength by voluntary enlistment and the national guard is in a similar situation. Training facilities already are taxed to make ready for the front men now available. Inequities of an unavoidable nature will be shown in the statistical report. There probably will be some amended regulations based on actual experience with the increment continued on Page Two.

Toledo Ohio Aug 2 The second section of a Columbus Retail Grocers association excursion train on the Toledo & Ohio Central Railroad was wrecked in Lime City ten miles south of Toledo. One railroad man is dead, seventy passengers are dying in Perrysburg and Maumee hospitals, and 20 to 30 others are injured. The crash followed a suspected sudden air brake setting as the heavy locomotive toppled and several coaches crumpled.
In New York Aug 22 ship yard workers voted to strike generally in the New York district but agreed to delay action while United States mediators seek settlement. Labor leaders say about 12 000 men are on strike now and more would join if the general strike had gone ahead. Navy yard operations were to continue until a meeting of navy yard employees tonight.
