House approves Madden amendment on railroad valuation

Washington April 29 the House adopted Madden's amendment to the railroad bill by 130 to 67 establishing a physical valuation of railroads. The Inter-State Commerce Commission would determine the value of all property of every common carrier. Several Republicans opposed, saying it would burden the commission and nullify the bill. Insurgent and Democratic members joined to support the amendment, with cross-party votes noted among numerous representatives.

Elks Night At Polis Promises Big Week In Town

Tonight Poli's hosts Elks Night marked by elaborate decorations and floor to box seating. The program includes Nat Willis singing, Maggie Cline toplins, Captain George Auger with Jeck the Giant Killer, Marion Giartman in Blondie, The Three Kuhns, and an electrograph film of Elks at last convention. Riotous Crowd Attacks Streetcar Breaks Strike Attempt

In Columbus on April 29 rioting followed the streetcar company’s bid to break a recently organized union strike. A streetcar was attacked at Broad and Leonard, police tried to disperse the crowd, but they overwhelmed officers, the car overturned and wrecked. No arrests were made.

Jockey Shot by Prizefighter Under Arrest at Pimlico

Baltimore April 29 William Wood 85 of Columbus a jockey riding for the stables at Pimlico is in critical condition at a university hospital from a bullet wound in the abdomen. Gan Garner a Philadelphia prizefighter is under arrest but claims self defense. The shooting occurred early today.

Daring thief steals $1209 in unsigned bills at bank

In Syracuse on April 29 a bold theft occurred at a local bank. President Snow was signing unsigned five dollar sheets when a stranger entered, engaged him in conversation, and fled with 60 sheets valued at about 1209 dollars.

Columbus April 29 William Homer Leavitt artist plans to go to Pairview Nebraska to prevent Ruth Bryan Leavitt from marrying an English army officer claiming she was never divorced. He wants his two children in any possible way. William Jennings Bryan declined to discuss the alleged marriage interference.

Ballinger accuses Glavis of deliberate lies at conservation trial

Washington, April 29. Secretary Ballinger testified that L R Glevis deliberately lied to the Congressional investigating committee during the conservation trial. He defended his conduct on Cunningham Alaskan claims and denied having any interests in Alaska lands while outlining his public service and relations with Garfield and Roosevelt. He labeled Glavis’s claims of a Alaska discussion as a wilful, deliberate lie.

Firemen Rescue Woman From Tenement Smoke

New Haven April 29 Mrs Mary L Meyers over 70 narrowly escaped death by suffocation when firemen climbed to her third story perch at 74 Congress avenue and rescued her from smoke pouring from a basement blaze. Neighbors reported smoke shortly before six oclock. Firemen hoisted ladders and saved her as she was about to be overcome. The building suffered severe damage.

Never Again Says Drunk Mistaken for Housebreaker

Jessie White a young mechanic of the Locomobile Co boarding at 742 Broad street was charged with burglary after police found him entering a house near his boarding place before daybreak. He claimed he mistakenly entered his own boarding house, could not locate his lock with his key and was stag- gering through the hall when arrested by Sergeant Blansfield and Patrolman Holbrook.

Greenfield C. C. Annual Banquet Bigger Than Ever

Greenfield Country club at Greenfield Hill held its ninth annual banquet with a rose bedecked hall and post dinner ceremonies installing Simon C. Perry as president. N E Sherwood stepped down after nine years, with Bradley succeeding him. Speakers praised the club’s welfare and foretold future growth as guests arrived from miles around for a night of music and merriment past one in the morning.

Strike vote ordered for telegraphers on New Haven

Special to the Farmer reports ballots will be sent to telegraphers on the New York New Haven Hartford line instructing a vote on a strike covering the entire system.
