Charles Crawl and Philip Legler were rescued from the Finleyville Cincinnati mine of Mononghela River Consolidated Coal & Coke Co after a Wednesday explosion. Crawl, a six year old survivor of the Mariana mine disaster in 1908, lost an eye. Rescuers J McVickers and Clyde Gibson pulled the two men to safety after two and a half miles of tunnels. Crawl described enduring extreme thirst and hunger as they crawled through old workings. A chalked goodbye message on Crawl’s overalls read I Good bye my children I God bless you. Eight more bodies were recovered, bringing total deaths to 96.
