Interned German Warship Cormoran Blows Up in Guam
The interned German cruiser Cormoran at Guam blew herself up rather than surrender to American forces. Two German warrant officers and five enlisted men were killed. twenty officers, 42 warrant officers, and 321 enlisted men were captured. Capt. Roy Smith reported the explosion occurred at 8 p.m. Washington time. the vessel had been interned amid tensions with American naval authorities. The ship had been chased into Guam by Japanese warships after being forced to burn woodwork to generate steam.
