The Weekly Banner reports Lyons measles outbreak with six thousand cases, political fizz of a greenback convention, and a growing demand for government bonds. Other items note a snow storm in Ohio, yellow fever death in Havana, renewed specie payments in Maine, and shifts in U S politics and banking.
The Calis a live as a newsy paper and in point of typographical appearance is not surpassed in Texas. It is two weeks old and already shows efficient encouragement for an enlargement.
Ultra Republican papers claim the freedmen reject old slave era freedoms and reject work, arguing negro supremacy is dead. A movement in Southern states seeks Exodus to Liberia, with St. Louis Republican urging departure if equality here fails. It cites South Carolina and Louisiana clashes 1867 to 1877 as nonrepeatable.
A Memphis merchant bought $10,000 in Mexican dollars in New York at 92 cents each and paid them out as change in Memphis dollar for dollar, claiming an $800 profit. Mexican dollars are quoted 9 cents buying and 96 cents selling in Galveston. Brenham dealers pay 90 cents. Also noted is a Paris Legion of Honor award to a long time blind piano tuner and a salary cut for Col. Tom Scott of the Pennsylvania Railroad.
Mr. Borars of South Carolina, from the Committee on Ways and Means, reports a bill allowing deposits of not less than one dollar at any United States postal money order office. When deposits reach 650, they may be converted, at the depositor’s option, into four percent bonds.
Three reports on the Southern Pacific Railroad emerge, one backing the Texas Pacific and a majority favoring the California Southern Pacific. A Morrison signed report from Chaois suggests it will swing the balance, defeat both sides, and postpone construction indefinitely.
The Waco Telephone reports 56,000 Grangers in Texas with 10,000 female Grangers and 26,000 Grangers as voters. Texas has 210,000 voters, 150,000 Democrats. Grangers are less than one eighth of the state's voting population.
A Brenham daily is planned named Seréimes once 250 subscribers sign up. The town already hosts a strong daily paper and does not need another, claims the Houston Telegram. Templeton's act drew a good crowd in Houston Saturday and they travel to New York next.
The Dallas Burning Call argues against a whipping post in the state noting current jail and penitentiary punishments worsen offenders. It questions reformation without degradation, cites high recidivism, mentions varied local items from Victoria to Dallas, including crimes, politics, and public notices.
The Galveston Journal of Commerce notes oyster and fish earning potential with small capital while few locals engage in the business. Texas canned goods sales are enormous and vegetables could be canned locally. A Galveston Civilian report says fat hogs were shipped from inland to New Orleans, aided by improved packing, with New Orleans markets outpacing Southern Texas. A New York Herald piece praises advertising’s role in business growth.
County court action items include Carl Behutze and others before Justice Davis with fines for assault. Acquittals in defaulling road work cases. Greenback delegates Billingslea and Carter attend Austin, with party discussions and a recount of recent election news. A charity concert by Mrs. E D Pitts at Chappell Hill college raises near $100 for the parsonage.
The Galveston Civilian reports Dr. Hem bold has been declared sane and is urged to settle a due bill of five to six hundred dollars that has been overdue for several days.
Tir Houston argues that if the two thirds rule holds at the convention, both Throck Morton and Hubbard face a real threat of defeat.

An evidence style ad claims Parker's Ginger Tonic relieves stomach pain headaches nervousness low spirits and many ailments. It promises comfort for the aged and convalescent, boosts strength and warmth, and markets four-drugstores bottles priced at 25 cents to a dollar.
An OCR damaged note advertises reduced prices on dry goods including boots shoes clothing hats caps and more at a store named D W Bloombargl with daily specials at Newhouer Brows. The text is garbled but suggests a sale of assorted merchandise to save money.
Linen bargains headline the column with prices shown at 21 cents per yard for Beadtece and similar fabrics advertised as a clearance in Newbouer storefronts.
