The Houston financial statement for the year ending December 2 reports total receipts of 103086.50 and current expenses of 6603.52. The city’s outstanding debt totals 1691349.03, with revenues barely covering six percent interest on the obligation.

In Custer county two men named Ketchum and Mitchell were accused of stealing stock. They killed a herder named Stevens who tried to arrest them. Armed masked men seized the suspects from the sheriff, tied them to a tree, and burned them. About twenty five masked herders participated in the cremation. This appears to be the first recorded case of burning for cattle theft, a remedy likely to be effective.
In Galveston on Friday the Santa Fe directors agreed to borrow 250000 on a mortgage. A stockholders meeting on Saturday ratified the directors action. The Galveston News predicts uninterrupted progress, a boon for Brenham Bellville Caldwell and Belton, but bad news for Houston.
In Hartford county two men were found guilty of assault with intent to kill a neighbor who voted for the Democratic congressional candidate. They were sentenced to six years in the state penitentiary. The report suggests Blaine of Maine should investigate the case.
The Brenham Greys were greeted at the ball by Capt. Kirby and Messrs Hanney and Salley. Kirby has many warm friends in the area, while Hanney and Salley left the strongest positive impression. The Greys’ uniform is handsome and prized as the dearest color, the genuine old Confederate grey.
The Telegram notes public outrage as Byrd Moore, who aided in the assassination of Capt. Killough near LaGrange, is cleared by a jury. Doleful state papers decry crime suppression while judges release defendants.
