October opens with social notes on visitors from Jackson Goshen Pelahatchie and Florence along with local updates on residents’ movements. James W. Busick in Memphis for Tri State Fair real estate talks and Rev Wayne Sutton’s ill health are noted, plus school and legal matters and community events.

Red Cross committees from all Rankin County auxiliaries will meet at Brandon Court House on Saturday at 2:30 PM to report work done and paid memberships. The meeting marks the first Lone spore of the Chapter on October 1. Also, the Parent-Teachers Association will meet Friday at 8:30 PM in the school auditorium to discuss civic work for the coming year. Officials: Mrs. Ira W. Shields and Mrs. C. E. Gayden. Local ads mention Meadows Mill, seeds, stoves, shoes, fresh mackerel, sap pine cross ties, and other items from Brandon area merchants. The U.S. Interior Land Office in Jackson announces Walter E. Jones's intent to prove up on his 1914 Homestead claim in Rankin/Jackson area with final three-year proof planned for October 24, 1917, before local officials.
Barnum and Bailey announce a major exhibition in Jackson on October 12. The show promises a lavish program with the Alladdin and His Wonderful Lamp pageant, 1400 performers, 1000 animals, and multiple rings. A grand street parade, 60 clowns, exotic animals, and a record large tent are highlighted as part of the grand event. Also included is a legal notice about the sale of saw mill machinery in Rankin County, Mississippi, following a chancery court decree in 1917.
