A Good Suggestion for County Road Improvement

Sidney L McLaurin urges Brandon residents to fund three miles of road from the depot to town under government supervision. He proposes a private subscription of at least $100, with $25 from him, and a road committee to manage funds and supervise work, promising strict accounting and potential expansion if early efforts succeed.

State Fair in Jackson October Run to November

The state fair in Jackson runs October 26 through November 5 with recast premium lists and added classes for farm products and crafts. The directorate is unpaid and open office hours are maintained. A larger stock pavilion and enhanced fine arts, flower, poultry, grain, and forage displays are planned with President Taft visiting November 1. Half fare rail rates apply for ten days.

Death of a Friend in a 1909 Serenade Tragedy

The fair community mourns Alex H. Mitcham two days after a serenade at Jim Walters home ended in fatal gunfire. Walters allegedly fired at the group, hitting Mitcham in the chest and left arm, dying within minutes at age 24. Mitcham, described as quiet and kind, leaves a mother and siblings, with many friends sharing grief. Churchgoing and funeral rites follow at Line Creek as the town seeks comfort.

Evans Enochs wedding unites Dr B P Evans and Miss Sarah Enochs

On the last Sabbath morning Dr. B P Evans and Miss Sarah Enochs were married at the Enochs home by Rev F Emery. Evans is a Leake County citizen with many local friends. The bride, daughter of the late Judge J R Knochs, is noted for strong character. After the ceremony, the couple left for New Orleans where the groom will attend medical lectures this winter.
