Lewis Case Decided in Federal Court at San Antonio
In San Antonio on May 10 Judge Maxey refused a writ of habeas corpus for William Lewis a black soldier convicted by a Fort Bliss court martial of conduct prejudicial to good order and discipline sentenced to six months at Leavenworth and a dishonorable discharge. He ruled military law allows retry after civil acquittal and that Leavenworth is a military prison not a federal penitentiary.
