Domestic Infelicity and Rising Divorce Rates in US
Preliminary census estimates show a sharp rise in divorces in the United States. From 1887 to 1907 about 1,400,000 divorce applications were filed, with three-fourths granted. The prior twenty-year span 1867 to 1887 yielded 328,000 divorces, far lower, even when adjusting for population. The rate was 88 per 100,000 in the first period and 70 per 100,000 in the second, more than doubling overall, with rural areas reporting far fewer divorces than cities.

Warned by a Hen Egg in Mississippi
In New Albany Mississippi eight miles south of town the community is stirred by a hen egg found in a Morton nest. The raised inscription reads Repent for this is the last year with dotted Y s crossed t s and a final period. Mrs Cynthia Morton discovered it and a crowd viewed the egg as Mr Morton exhibited it in town. He keeps Plymouth Rock chickens and refused to sell the egg.
