Road Bond Issue Bids Open for Rankin County Mississippi
The Rankin county Mississippi Board of Supervisors invites sealed bids by noon on the first Monday of March 1917 for road bonds totaling thirty thousand dollars. Bonds, five hundred dollars each, bear 5 percent interest, mature over ten years with semiannual coupons, and are payable to the purchaser or bearer. Bonds will be lithographed and signed by the president and clerk, with county seal, and numbered sequentially. The clerk will advertise for bids as required by law.

Mr W R Beattie head of the Peanut Division of the Bureau of Plant Industry addressed Rankin county listeners at 11 am. He spoke on soil, seed, cultivation and marketing, noting oil mills pay at least 75 cents per bushel and predicting $1 for the next crop as demand grows. Businessmen and farmers attended, signaling a likely large peanut acreage this year.

Preliminary Hearing in Edwards Case Opens in Rankin
Edwards charged with murder of Homer McNair near Gallilee in Rankin county faced a preliminary hearing before Justice W. H. Walters on February 2. Bail set at 2000 awaiting grand jury action. Evidence showed a confrontation over a woman ending with McNair fatally stabbed. Edwards fled and later stood trial in Simpson county.

Spring Arrives Early as Farmers Report Fine Weather
The community enjoys unseasonably warm February days with good health aside from a few cases. A daughter was born Jan 31 to Mr and Mrs C E Stuckey. Ida and John Bordeaux returned from a visit near Crystal Springs. Miss Alline Fannie and Oscar Byrd visited Uncle John Buford near Poplar Springs over the weekend. The local school is progressing well.

Old Negroes Ambushed Near Brandon One Killed
Nelse Moore and his wife, both older African Americans, were ambushed while traveling near Brandon. Nelse died from a heart wound, his wife was severely wounded but survived. Major Hobson and Lige Lumbley were arrested. the assailants fired thrice from a thick woods as a bush blocked the road. The incident follows previous dynamite and gunfire at Moore’s home.
