Rankin County Board Plans 1918 Depository Bids and Loans

Rankin County Board met December 3 1917 in regular session with all members. They ordered sealed bids for county depository for 1918 and awarded feed contracts to Taylor Wills Grocery Co W G Barnes and L H Mashburn. They approved teachers fund payments 5786 80 visited many schools and approved land sale to O P Cross for 550 with 50 cash and rest due Feb 45 1918. They granted various township loans and authorized committees to view security, audited county books, expanded stock law districts, and set road and bridge projects including graveling and building bridges on Pelahatchie Shiloh road. A bids notice for road slag and bridge building were issued for January 1918.

Rankin County board borrows 860000 for teachers' salaries

The Rankin County Board of Supervisors authorizes a 8600 000 loan from Rankin County Bank Brandon to fund teachers' salaries in non district schools. The loan bears 6 percent interest, due March 1, 1918, repaid from the common school fund. The board also hires L. D. Smith as County Home manager at 35 monthly, and W. H. Watson as county physician at 25 monthly, with duties for paupers and jail cases.

Soldier Explains Mortar Fire Near San Francisco

A serviceman describes unusual loud mortar noises and two mile by three mile trajectories as he watched shells ascend and splash. He notes firing howitzers at a hill target beyond the Golden Gate and details obtaining range and direction for aiming. He hints his leave to enjoy San Francisco sights and mentions his many sisters and brothers in a closing sign off from Fave J. Russell.

Rankin County Seeks Bank Depositories for 1918

The Rankin County Board of Supervisors Mississippi announces its intention to receive sealed proposals from banks to qualify as county depository for 1918. Proposals due by 12 noon January 7 1918, at the January meeting, with right to reject all bids. December 5 1917. J A Robinson, Clerk.

Notice of Trustee's Sale in Rankin County Mississippi

Trustee Andrew Bockhalter will conduct a public auction of land described as NEI-4 of NW1-4 Section 34 T7 R3E containing 40 acres and a 15 year old black mare named Sadie. The sale, at Brandon courthouse steps, will occur January 7 1918 between 11 A.M. and 2 P.M. for cash to the highest bidder. The deed secures Will Davis and later transfers to W. C. Brown. title believed good but only conveys trustee's title.
