Railroads to cut freight rates nationwide except New England
Thom as DeWitt Cuyler president of the Association of Railway Executives announced an immediate 10 percent reduction on many rates since Septem ber 1, 1920, to speed business revival. The cut, costing about 55 million dollars, applies to carloads of grains, hay, tobacco, cotton products, citrus, and more, with New England traffic excluded. The change, to take effect within ten days, relies on a one day notice to the Interstate Commerce Commission. The railroads seek labor cost relief and plan a public inquiry into hay and grain rates to see if further reductions are lawful without harming operations.
