A Carranza leader warns in Washington that Mexicans will fight to the death to resist U.S. intervention. Gen Pablo Gonzales says armed intervention would trigger war if necessary, amid border tensions and fears of clashes with American troops.
London reports little daily change in Poland and Baltic affairs while diplomats of the quadruple Entente seek to split the Balkan League and draw all Balkan states to their side. Sofia dominates the talks as Bulgaria weighs territorial offers and neutrality, with Greece and Serbia resisting Macedonian cessions and Turkey opposing concessions.
Plan aims to overturn Texas control with the San Diego network. Mexican and Confederate sympathies spread across Cameron Hidalgo Starr counties. Rangers seize a revolt flag and letters urging liberation, while federal probes reveal a planned mass killing and 3000 pledged followers along the Rio Grande and western border.
President Wilson, arriving in Washington from Cornish New Hampshire on August 12, took charge of Mexico policy, endorsing the peace appeal from the Latin American conference and arranging its transmission to Mexican leaders. An indictment in Chicago charges 6 Eastland disaster officials with manslaughter and criminal carelessness. George T. Arnold president, William H. Hull vice president, W. C. Steele secretary treasurer, Ray W. Davis assistant secretary treasurer, Harry Pedersen captain, Joseph M. Erickson engineer. Bonds set at 20000 for officials and 10000 for Pedersen and Erickson.
Reports from Nish Aug 13 describe the Austrian Serb bombardment of Belgrade with large calibre howitzers. No loss of life is reported as fires and smoke rise in Semlin and Panscova. Further shelling at grade caused panic but no victims. Military chatter links mobilization and supply blocks to Turkey, with Serbian and Austrian front clashes noted but no invasion confirmed.
Official report details a night raid on August 12 along the east coast of England. Six civilians were killed and 23 injured while 14 houses suffered serious bomb damage. One Zeppelin likely damaged and escaped. a mobile anti aircraft unit may have damaged another. This was the second raid in a week, with prior attacks in June and August causing over a hundred deaths and dozens wounded.
In Tampa Florida John Wace a Black man convicted for confronting a white woman died in an unrelated incident Aug 13 after four attempts to spring a fatal trap failed. He reportedly asked to remove the black cap so he could watch repairs to the device. The execution device twice refused to operate before a fourth attempt succeeded.
London reports Field Marshal von Hindenburg assumes personal command of the German effort to capture Kovno near the Vilna and Warsaw routes amid renewed fighting as civilians evacuate the cities. Russians reportedly repulse many German attacks, while northern advances stall near Dvinsk and Poniewesz. In the southeast, von Mackensen is checked by a Russian counter-attack as German gains near the Bug River loom.
A Daily Telegraph dispatch from Athens reports the Turkish cruiser Goeben renamed Sultan Selim after its sale to Turkey was torpedoed near the Bosphorus by an allied submarine. The crew grounded the vessel in a narrow creek to permit repairs. British subs also torpedoed the German Turkish cruiser Breslau and a transport gunboat in the Black Sea. In Poland Russians resist a cordon while allied efforts push to open the Dardanelles to send munitions to Russia. Since Aug 7 Gallipoli fighting on Krithia road has been nearly continuous with Krithia and Anzac sectors showing gains Aug 11 as Australians and New Zealanders advance but gains north of their line stall.
The State Department released the U S reply denying Austro Hungarian charges that American exports of war munitions to Austria's enemies violate neutrality. The note affirms U S neutrality and recalls Germany and Austria-Hungary supplied Britain during the Boer War. It emphasizes reliance on a consistent neutral policy and market rights if attacked.
An Aug. eleventh electrical storm near Scooba damaged property and left Tom Reynolds briefly unconscious after a lightning strike. A ten year old boy drowned at Godbold mineral well lake near Summit on Aug. 12. Walter Simmerman, a Danville native, was found murdered near Fish Pond on Aug. 12 with shotgun wounds and a broken neck. Dr. L. F. Scott located the drowned boy by diving feet first. W. E. Thompson, jailed in Biloxi, faces grand larceny and counterfeit check charges tied to $900 in alleged operations and an asserted Detroit Ford company impersonation. Roma Thomas of Mantee attempted suicide after learning of lover C. E. Wilson’s death caused by her brother. Miss Thomas’s parents opposed Wilson. a coroner’s jury found the brother guilty of murder. A Philadelphia church project was announced Aug. 13, with site grading to begin. Fire destroyed West Pascagoula Creosoting Works main building Aug. 13. $30,000+ loss. Howard & Bell store near Lexington and a nearby seed house burned Aug. 11. arson suspected as depot also set aflame, bloodhounds traced the trail to Little Black Creek Swamp. Insurance partly covered losses.
