Northwest fair sham battle draws thirty- thousand crowds
The last day of the fair featured a large sham battle with General Lew Wallace and Lucius Fairchild expected to command, though Wallace did not arrive. About 85 000 spectators gathered on the grounds and thousands more watched from the air as 4000 veterans and militia took part. The battle opened at 3 oclock with heavy artillery and musket fire, ending with the Union forces seizing the field and the flag of the three stars and thirteen stripes raised in victory. One wounded man, George Knox, suffered a gunshot wound to the forehead but will recover. The Grand Army and state fair division share half the gross receipts.
