Boothby Wins Brand of Rail Race Against Earthquake
Boothby tells a tale of a famed belt-track race near East St. Louis between the Vandalia and Ohio and Mississippi engines. The 60 from O and M led early, but an earthquake aided the rival, yet Boothby’s engine stayed ahead by a length as the trains barreled toward the bluffs. He never raced again, fearing a locomotive in league with cyclone and quake.
