New York Graphic saved from sheriff sale by near final negotiations
The New York Graphic's plant and franchises were spared from sale after its own owners explained that a Southern syndicate's purchase was nearly completed. The sheriff sale was deferred while the bargain with the Southern capitalist concluded. Albert A. Shaver, once Clare County treasurer, is jailed for allegedly misappropriating 1000 to 1800 dollars during 1884 term. A May 14, 1884, incident where Shaver was found bound and robbed of 4000 dollars is questioned.
