Loss by Fire Destroys Jas S Gardner Grocery on 6th Street

Large grocery house owned by Jas S Gardner burned to the ground last Saturday morning. Fire reported around four. Cause likely a lamp explosion. Water pressure and pump communication blamed for delayed suppression. Building belonged to Patrick Carney, insured for 800. Gardner loss estimated 5000 to 6000 with 4000 insurance. Day and Meagher note stock updates. Smith advertises Star tobacco.

St Francis Church Fair a Great City Event Last Week

The fair attracted large Friday and overall attendance exceeded last year. Organizers Miss Mary Meekins Maggie Meekins Mamie McCarthy Reilly Mary Hawkins and Eddie LaFond received praise for rapid six day setup and help. Peter Mertz won the gold headed cane for sheriff candidacy while Miss Mary Hawkins took the ladies cloak. Receipts neared 800 dollars. Committee honored Eddie LaFond for service. gentlemanly committee listed. Day Meagher Westfall shop ads note French Kid Shoe sale and made to measure suits on short notice.

Grand patriotic roller rink benefit for Charleston sufferers

A Saturday evening October 2 entertainment at the roller rink under Pop Thomas Post No 30 G A R features Col Reddington from New York and promises lively camp fire fun. Proceeds share three quarters to the post and one quarter to Charleston earthquake sufferers. Tickets 50 cents and 25 for children. Also ads for Misses and Children's cloaks at Day Meagher’s and fifty barrels of choice apples at L J Cale’s.
