Mr J H Bryant who for a year has served in J L Smith Co's jewelry store leaves this week for Minneapolis. J H Brabender who supervised Weibler's store leaves for New Prague to start a dry goods business. John leaves many friends behind. J J Smith hires G S Gardner a twenty year veteran to run the repairing department. engraving offered without extra charge.
Mrs. R. E. Gleason received telegraph notification of her brother John Smith's death in Fargo after a long illness with consumption. Remains were sent via Brainerd on Monday night toward Prescott Wisconsin, where Mrs. Gleason will attend the burial rites.
A dining car attached to Northern Pacific train No 12 caught fire from a kitchen range near Bedford and was totally destroyed. Conductor W C Thomas suffered a broken leg in two places while attempting to move the car from the track. Loss estimated at 11000 dollars with 19090 dollars insured.
J. C. Foote’s at the corner of Tth and Front streets advertises bargain drug items. The notice emphasizes low prices and a wide selection for customers seeking value in medicines and health goods.
The Little Falls Transcript reports a large steamsaw mill rising at Ft. Ripley along the Mississippi just below Nakasippi mouth. Most machinery sits on the ground and will run soon as logs are hauled to the mill. Built by Shatto & Vewnis of Minneapolis with 8. Trebby holding an interest. capacity about 1,000,000 feet monthly.
Notice to boarding houses and private families announces Hoffman offers the finest grade butter in jars priced at 22 cents per pound.
A three mile contest Tuesday evening features Miss Emma Weber Tillie Weber and Miss Emma Farrar racing for prizes. First place wins a pair of club skates, second place earns free rink admission and skates for 30 days.
City Clerk Keene records 268 births in Brainerd for 1884 with two pairs of twins and one illegitimate child. Deaths total 137. A full countywide breakdown by towns will be published next week for Crow Wing county.
In Brainerd a debate erupts over the mayor’s finances with the Tribune alleging no visible support while noting Mayor Gardier paid over 200 in taxes this year and did not seek abatements.
The Burns Mays rape case was dropped and Burns discharged after the Mays family stopped prosecuting. The affair followed a shooting escapade by the Mays girls weeks ago. The county ends spending on the case and taxpayers are relieved to see it conclude.
The board of education met at W. W. Hartley’s office with full attendance to accept the new high school building. Hartley moved and Gardner seconded the motion to proceed with the contractor. The president treasurer and clerk were authorized to settle with the contractor and storm doors were ordered installed.

Miss Castleton visits the opera house next Wednesday and Thursday with a celebrated comedy company. They present two musical comedies famous across the country. Castleton enjoys a national reputation as a popular and fascinating performer on the American stage. Demand for seats is high and early reservations are advised.
Saturday evening last, the Crow Wing County Bar Association began with E. E. Webster as chairman and W. S. McClennahan as secretary. A drafting committee was named to prepare by laws and organization and report next Saturday evening at Sleeper and Webster's in the same office.

The Peake Sisters of nine members consent to give an entertainment in Brainerd to raise funds for the Episcopal Church Sunday school treasury. The show occurs at Mrs. E. M. Westfall's residence on Sth street north next Thursday the 22d inst. Attendees praise their performances and are invited to attend for a worthwhile evening.
The Carleton County Press endorses H C Stivers for Brainerd mayor calling him broad minded conservative and populist. It predicts a large win and a progressive administration though notes Stivers may decline and that The Tribune opposes the nomination and aims to elect the next mayor.
A Beaty and Bray worker injured while felling a large tree in the woods above Aitken died after being brought to Brainerdham Tama rack and then to the depot for medical care. The young Minneapolis resident’s name was not learned.
Ten published riddles were tried by about seventeen contestants. Three correct entrants were Mrs A E Veon C H Congdon and A G Gallop. A hat draw selected Mrs Veon as winner and the prize book was awarded. Names of all correct solvers listed.
A meeting called by Mrs. Kinred with Mrs. Howes and other local leaders approved raising funds for the poor. An entertainment is set for February 11 at the opera house featuring a musical program and a dramatized play All that Glitters is not Gold with cast to be announced.
The 19 year old Alex White a city machinist and relative of Chas Pegg shot himself in his room around 10 pm. Neighbors say he loved Miss Minnie Bernhart, rival Gus Rolph and Rob vied for her affection. White had lately returned from Brainerd after work at Northern Pacific shops and struggled with despondent feelings.
All accounts due H. Theviot & Co have been left with F. Luken. He will be found at Theviot's brick block upstairs. Parties indebted to this firm should call and settle to save costs.
The union gospel meetings will continue next week with services Monday evening at the Baptist Church and Tuesday evening at the Congregational Church, followed by additional sessions at both venues.

The troupe is said to be the best traveling company and will draw a large audience. The San Francisco Chronicle praises Castleton’s benefit and notes the show’s charm, music, and pretty girls amid local gossip and long public run.

The program features Scotch music, songs, recitations, a Highland dance, and interludes in two parts with performers including Mrs. G W Scott Mrs J H Davenport and E N Donaldson. The concert starts promptly at 8 o’clock.

Plans call for a new Brainerd dam and a single company to drive logs downriver, with estimates of 20 to 40 million logs sorted monthly and a possible five cent per thousand tax for log sorting. A three way conference sets stage for a legislative bill while Brainerd men form a drafting committee and Minneapolis interests loom over the plan.
