The Railway News Reporter from Denver notes P H Carney of this city in a complimentary notice. Pat Kearney of the Northern Pacific, who joined the Brotherhood in 1870, has run engines for eighteen years between Brainerd Ohio and St Paul Minnesota and served as chief engineer of Brainerd Division 144 for fourteen years. Sam St Pierre is opening a new building with license from Todd county on Friday, joining his brother in operating Motley’s popular stopping place and growing rich from ventures. Abe St Pierre will run the old place while Sam oversees Staples interests. The new building cost about $5000 and houses Mrs Closterman’s hotel with a ground floor saloon.
Notices from Brainerd recount several nuptials and licenses: Clarence Luven and Miss S Searles wed at a residence on 6th Street South on December 20 1889 with Rev G H Davis officiating. the couple, daughter of ex Alderman S W Searles, depart for Iowa after a noon ceremony. Additional items include Charlee Buryo and Matilda Lekberg’s license, D Walsh and Mary Guillot wed, and J N Roberts with Charlotte Clarke tying the knot at Hills home, followed by Thomas Watts and Evelyn Titus’s Christmas Eve marriage.
Mr and Mrs David R Craig marked their fiftieth anniversary with family guests only due to Mrs Craigs health. Married in Clarendon county Pennsylvania on December 26 1839 they later moved to Iowa before settling in this city with their sons Dave and Harry Thirteen children blessed the union eight survive and joined the celebration Along with kin from Vernon Iowa Spokane Falls Washington Jamestown Dakota and Minnekogon Falls North Dakota Charles Craig of MinneWakon Falls was absent.
Secretary Van Campen of the Brainerd Y M C A received news that Henry Villard, former N P president, donated $2,000 to the Brainerd Y M C A building fund. The gift funds steam heating, bath tubs, and gymnasium as Brainerd citizens hail his confidence in the city's future.
On Christmas evening at their residence at Main and Fourth streets, Mr. and Mrs. Jno N Nevers celebrated ten years of marriage with a large gathering. The home was filled with friends, festivities lasted until about 11 30, and many tinware gifts were received, spanning a wide range of useful items.

Also valid on all routes from St Paul within 200 miles for outbound travel only on sale date. Parker advertises a large holiday toy selection including building blocks rocking horses dolls trains ships and more.
December 24 25 and 31 and January 1 excursion tickets sold from Brainerd to any point on the Northern Pacific in Wisconsin Minnesota North Dakota and Montana at one and one third fare round trip. The Perham Bulletin corrects a prior report that L. Dickinson, known as Dick, was arrested in Eau Claire Wisconsin for stealing 1500 dollars in jewelry. Authorities stated the man held was Ed Dickson, while Dickinson is tall and muscular with light hair. The paper apologizes and urges others to publish the correction.
The Minneapolis Tribune reports a rumor that after January 1 1890 the Northern Pacific and Wisconsin Central will merge and operate as the Grand Central. Management shifts are noted with J M Hannaford as general freight and traffic manager and C B Fee as general passenger traffic manager. Local changes include Martin to be replaced by Morse in Minneapolis Freight Office and E P Capen rumored to run Minneapolis ticket office. Twenty lyres will buy a first class carving set at Clark and Co.

An account from Youth's Companion describes a Bantu man suffering acute rheumatism who rejects English doctors and seeks a witch-doctor. The healer, described as repulsive with snake eyes and clotted hair, performs exorcisms and extracts living reptiles from the wound by mouth. After demanding cattle as payment, she sucks the wound, spits out a grasshopper, a beetle, a lizard, and hair, claiming bewitching matter. The sick man is said to improve as the ritual unfolds.
