A rear end collision on the Minnesota and International near Merrifield at 5 30 Saturday left both logs laden trains with their engines and cabooses damaged but no one hurt. Engineer DuBois and his fireman leapt to safety as the rear engine plowed into the lead train’s caboose and cars toppled into a ditch. wrecker work and debris removal followed, with questions about signaling and visibility.

Two Train Workers Die In Northland Outing
E T Van Hook a young Duluth and Iron Range brakeman formerly in the company offices at Duluth was killed on a rear caboose platform near Two Harbors when the train split and the safety brake jolted him causing fatal neck injuries. Pearl Glasford is Mrs Van Hook. Frank Neumie another brakeman on an Eastern Minnesota freight was killed at Deer River when a switch was found unlocked and the engine derailed with Neumie’s neck broken.
