Texas Agriculture Progress Amid Drouth and Irrigation Expansion
The 1953 Annual Report of the Texas Agricultural Extension Service shows drought spurred the largest irrigation expansion in a year with over 5 million irrigated acres across 212 counties. Eggs sold graded reached 23 million dozen, boosting producers’ income by 1.15 million dollars. Soil judging gained popularity as 4-H clubs attended most soil judging schools. Despite poor weather, 505 846 home gardens were planted and cultivated, 50 000 more than the year before. Beef cattlemen and dairies stored more feed in silos, signaling a shift to winter readiness. Copies of the 23 page report are available from the Agricultural Information Office at College Station.

Fewer Cattle due in 1955 and market trends
The nation will enter 1955 with fewer cattle than in 1954 due to dry weather and reduced interest in expanding beef herds. Beef production remains at record levels while fed cattle prices show little change this fall and grass cattle decline seasonally. Hog slaughter and lamb prices trend downward with limited prospect for price recovery until after the fall marketing season.
