The Brady Jaycees organize a Labor Day weekend Holiday Rest Stop on the courthouse lawn with free coffee and Cokes to curb holidays deaths and accidents. Joe King chairs the project as locals are urged to stop at Jaycee rest stops while traveling through Brady.
United Way kicks off October 2 in McCulloch County under local direction. Campaign chairwoman Mrs. G. H. Ricks stresses county control, local problem identification, and yearly evaluation of agencies to ensure funds are spent to best advantage.
John Smith a Doole farmer aged 60 was shot at the Ella Lloyd Blauvelt home in Rochelle during a family altercation. He died on arrival at Heart of Texas Memorial Hospital. Blauvelt faces murder charges with a McCulloch County Grand Jury slated to meet around Oct 1.
Mr and Mrs S J Carmichael returned Saturday from a two week visit to Oklahoma and Colorado. They were met in Grand Lake Colorado by their son Robert for several days visit.
Mr and Mrs Max Morris of Albuquerque New Mexico were in Brady several days this week on business Mrs Morris is the former Sandra Hall
The 20th Annual Lions Carnival and Concho County Old Settlers Reunion will be held in Eden on September 9. Activities begin at 2 p.m. with the Old Settlers arrival, live music throughout the afternoon, a barbeque supper at 5:30, and a 7:30 address by Congressman O C Fisher.
Mayor Norman S. Lawler and the Brady City Council released a statement detailing the necessity of higher electrical, water, sewer, and sanitation charges following approval of a 1 percent Sales and Use Tax. They cited a projected $80,000 annual tax take, looming bonded debt costs, past deficits, and plans to cut losses and shift certain costs to developers.
City council approved new utility rates to take effect on September bills. Sanitation rises from 2 to 3 dollars and sanitary sewer from 1.75 to 2.50 with 0.10 per additional fixture. Water and electricity rates also adjusted with stepped tiers and a higher minimum. Industrial rates gain a demand minimum and the average percentage increase will be reported later.
Labor Day weekend features 10 races per day at G Rollie White Downs starting at 2 p.m. Racing Secretary Robert Strickland expects many out of town entries. Meet sanctioned by American Quarter Horse Association and Racing Board of Texas, sponsored by July Jubilee to become annual. Over 700 condition sheets mailed. box seats $25 for two days.
