The Brady Bulldogs meet Fredericksburg Hillbillies at Bulldog Stadium at 8 p m in the final 18-AA district game. Brady, 8-1 and defending state champs, seeks to finish undefeated in district play while Fredericksburg eyes a season boost and potential upset.
The schedule lists Friday games including Fredericksburg at Brady and Bangs at Rochelle along with San Saba at Llano and Melvin and Lohn finishing their seasons.
The Brady School Board let a contract for a new field house at Brady High to Leslie Quain on his bid of 22 500, the lowest of three bids. The 104 by 30 foot concrete block building will replace the former frame structure burned last September and will include a chalk room weight room offices and showers. The board will finance with 16 373 from fire insurance and a short term loan. the old building sold for 250.
The 4-H Gold Star boy and girl of the year will be named Saturday at the 4-H Club Achievement Party at Brady Junior High School. The event starts at 7 p m and pins for 4-H work will be awarded along with recognition for other contest winners.
A cold wave dropped Brady’s temperature to 28 degrees on Wednesday night. Mrs. J R Cochran, U S weather observer, said it was the coldest night so far this fall in the area.
The Brady polling box ran out about 6 p m during Tuesday’s heavy turnout. Extra ballots were brought by Melvin and T Wood, with Sheriff Luke Vogel also supplying 10 to 15. Election judges said no one was left without a vote and some voters had difficulty marking the ballot correctly leading to some uncountable votes.
Rochelle plans Friday homecoming for former students with a 6 p m barbecue supper in the lunchroom and a 7 30 p m game between Rochelle Hornets and Bangs Dragons. Halftime honors include Mister Football and Football Sweetheart selections.
Chamber of Commerce workers gathered brady merchants to fund Santa Claus visits on Nov 26 and cover new street decorations. Manager Roger Wheeler urged cooperation, noting this may be the only Christmas for some children. Local contributors include J C Penney Threadgill Samuel Western Auto Rudder Drug McLean Rosenberg Puckett Homer Duncum Pepsi Perry Gibbs Ricks Made O Day City Drug Kings Fountain Tish's Kerrville Bus Co Ernest Johnson Barber Shop.
Campaign Chairman Ramon Wilensky reports $58,850 raised toward a $14,197 target. He warns several agencies may pull out if funds do not rise, noting a 5 percent drop in advance gifts and only about 70 percent of the employee division reported. He urges every family to pledge, citing Operation Cake Bake and the Red Cross inclusion.
Concho County Singing Convention will convene Sunday November 1 at 2 o'clock. The gathering will take place at the Eden Methodist Church with participants from the Concho singers group.
In McCulloch County voters turnout heavy with about 3,000 casting ballots. JFK carries county over Nixon Lodge 1,579 to 1,165 by 414 votes while Johnson wins U S Senate race 1,892 to 876 over Tower. County okays three of four Texas constitutional amendments but rejects annual legislative salaries.
The Coppini Academy of Fine Arts presented a Brady show dominated by Western and country life scenes. Notable works include Horse Shoeing Time by Joy Harrell Carrington and Hill Country by Clay McGaughy, with Porfirio Salinas showing Bluebonnets and Oaks and Dr. Waldine Tauch among exhibitors.
