Rain Fills Brady Creek Dams Bring Restarted Work

Recent rainfall in McCulloch County allows contractors to resume work on Brady Creek flood prevention dams. Bullard and Davidson begin on a Conn Johnson ranch dam north of Melvin, while Freeman and Ansley restart two Noble Johnson ranch dams northwest of Brady. Dams are 41 percent complete with extra water for borrows, and core trench work continues at Centex sites in Concho County though some dams remain halted. Soil Conservation Service begins tests for future projects.

Midland Man Vows to Brake After Warning Ticket

Sheriff J P Williamson issued a warning to a Midland man on Oct 31. The driver, H A Johnson, praised the courtesy, pledged not to speed again, and said he will keep to about 60 mph to protect his wife and two children.

Sunday Fire Alarm Blamed on Hot Motor

Fire at Riley's 66 Service Station 507 West Commerce Street early Sunday was caused by an overheated air compressor motor. The motor burned but no other damage occurred, according to Fire Chief Howard Salter.

Familiar Horses to Race At Brady Meet Thursday

Brady Armistice Day race meet features familiar Jubilee horses. Be Bold from Junction, Stepson and Lookout Ada from Buford Sheffield appear with Rag Man and Mr Upset also in attendance. Local riders from Austin include Ak Lad and Black Gallant. Dee Gee is entered by Wanda Harper, with track officials led by Jack Locklear and Lon Locklear coordinating judges and starters. Races begin at 2.50 pm with a cowboy relay and a Brady holiday crowd expected.

Formal Coffee Shop Opening At Hotel Brady

The opening day attracted hundreds who enjoyed free coffee at the Hotel Brady Coffee Shop. Mr and Mrs agnen Weaver marveled at the turnout, with strong Sunday business and praise for the remodeled hotel. Mrs Sheffield led improvements with hotel ownership by Mr and Mrs B R Sheffield. The General Hotel Supply Co installed new fixtures.

Voca Farmer Drills High Yield Water Well

A. C. Stewart, a Voca stock farmer and well driller, reports a new water well two miles south of Voca producing an estimated 650 to 750 gallons per minute from 330 feet depth. A test at 250 feet yielded 419 gallons per minute, limited by pump capacity, with water 135 feet above the cylinder. Stewart plans to irrigate about 40 acres from the well.

Woman Wins Grid Contest With Perfect 15 For Week

Mrs. Clyde Vance of Brady captured first place in the football guessing contest by predicting all 15 games correctly including Brady’s 14 to 20 defeat by Coleman. Bill Jack Smith earned second place. Darwin Cornelius and James Finlay Jr tied for third in the $2 pot.

Brady area urged to build good town to attract industry

E. L. Buelow of San Angelo told Brady Chamber of Commerce members that a town must be a good place to live to draw industry. He cited churches schools and taxes as key factors and urged local support for home grown industry while dismissing water and freight worries as non fatal obstacles.

Pickup Collides With Buck Near Hilda Mason County

Pod Myrick a local rancher from the Hilda community in Mason County collided with a buck on the road Monday night near the start of hunting season. The pickup’s grill and radiator were heavily damaged. The buck’s condition was uncertain as Pod could not determine damage.

County Plans For Female Jurors As Election Law Takes Effect

The County Commissioners Court prepares for women jurors next year after an amendment passed nationwide. Judge W. M. Deans notes the change goes into effect about Dec 15, with district judge A. O. Newman likely to appoint a jury commission for January. Plans include adding facilities at the juror dormitory and addressing rooming for women during trials. McCulloch County juries are chosen by a three man commission per court.

Brady issues three permits total $84,200

City of Brady issued three building permits in the last month totaling 84,200 dollars. The National Guard armory at 1405 North Bridge St. accounted for 62,000 dollars. Floyd Talley received 200 for relocating two structures to 901 Broad St. and Lloyd Bratton built a 6 room house at 705 Burns Ave in Stanburn Addition for 22,000 dollars.

Eight McCulloch officials win four-year terms

Eight McCulloch candidates secured four-year terms after statewide constitutional amendment approval. The winners include Love Kimbrough county judge and district clerk W R Johnson among others. Remaining officials will serve two years and seek four-year terms in 1956. Local 1956 elections will cover only certain offices.

Brady Boy Heads Tarleton Council

Ronnie Burk son of Mr and Mrs J G Burk of Brady has been elected president of the Tarleton State College Student Council. A 1953 Brady High School graduate he is a member of the Lords and Commoners and has lettered in track while majoring in physical education.
