The 12th annual Heart Texas Businessmen's Invitational Golf Tournament draws 116 entrants through Wednesday with 12 spots open. Texas players dominate the field including 43 locals led by Norman Lawler and Bud Harrell. out-of-state players Kenneth Anderson and Wylie McDonald also participate.
Mrs. Lucille Elizabeth Alexander 80 of Brady died 10 40 p m Wednesday at Chandler Nursing Home after a long illness. Born May 11 1890 in Mason County she lived in Brady 20 years. She married Jack Alexander who died in 1953. Survived by two sisters Mrs E M Womack Brady and Mrs W H Johnson Brownwood and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services pending at Wilkerson Funeral Home.
About 125 people from Extension District 7 counties attended a Brady banquet to honor Thelma Casey and Roy Huckabee, both San Angelo residents, for their service in 4-H leadership. Curly Hays of Abilene praised their dedication and urged continued youth leadership and competition to address societal issues.
Manuel Sanchez Jr. remained in serious condition before transfer to Kerrville Veterans Hospital after a gun shot wound to the left chest near 6 p.m. Sunday. A hospital fund was started with contact to Joe Cervantes of Brady for contributions.
Boy Scout Troop 471 and Cub Pack 471 of Rochelle place United States flags on veteran graves in the Rochelle area for Memorial Day. Flags were placed Wednesday and will fly through Saturday. Seventy five graves in Placid, Cowboy, Cox, East Sweden and Rochelle Cemeteries receive flags.
The 12th Heart O' Texas Businessmen's Invitational opens Friday at Brady Municipal Golf Course with 128 players from Texas and two out of state. Former champion Bill Sikes returns. Pete Newman and Chuck Ribelin have dominated in past years as Bobby Bragan joins the field. Local events include a cocktail party, barbecue, dance, and family entertainment for four days ending with Sunday finals and over 1500 in trophies and prizes.
The hospital building fund nears a half million dollars with contributions totaling 487486.49 from 2552 donors. A Washington datelined release notes Senate House conferees reached a compromise 2.76 billion bill extending Hill Burton hospital aid for three years and authorizing 1.26 billion for construction grants plus a 1.5 billion guaranteed loan program with 3 percent subsidies. Hardin Jones says Heart of Texas Memorial Hospital has sent its Hill Burton application to Austin.
The Texas Youth Convention enters its 25th annual session June 3 to 7 with youth from across the state. Daily services at 10 am 2 pm and 8 pm include fellowship, lunch at noon and refreshments at 6 pm. Rooms provided and emphasis on Holy Spirit work noted by Rev. Charles Grimes.
Over the past two weeks spring showers drenched McCulloch County with hail in places, halting harvests. Rain totals varied from 0.8 to 1.5 inches, with a notable marble sized hail at the Bill Engdahl farm damaging grain. A tornado alert shifted to thunderstorm after two days of rain. Ground remains saturated and runoff risks affect Brady Lake.
