Voca Bridge Okayed in Plans To Improve Road

The State Highway Commission approved a new bridge over the San Saba River at Voca as part of a broader plan to widen and straighten Farm Road 734 from Brady through Voca to Llano and connect to the Llano Marble Falls section. The site may not replace the low water bridge where the Hale family and Sharon Kennedy drowned April 29.

Rochelle School District Buys Three Teacher Homes Nearby

The Rochelle School District purchases three houses for teachers near the school. The properties were acquired from Harvey Knight, the estate of the late Sally Bratton, and from Mrs. Con da Byrd.

Eleven Rochelle seniors will receive diplomas in a Friday night commencement in the high school gym. Speaker Hulan Duncan of San Angelo, former Rochelle assistant coach, will address the crowd. Principal H. V. Sawyer will certify completion as Supt. C. W. Thompson presents diplomas. Linda Hagler is valedictorian. Eugene Johnson salutatorian. The class enjoyed a four day senior trip to Galveston May 9 to 12.

Delegates Have Big Time at State Democratic Convention

Herbert Harkrider reported a big time at the State Democratic Convention in Dallas this week. McCulloch County delegates included Harkrider Frank Lohn of Brady and Paul Lohn of Waldrip, who cast four votes for Lyndon B. Johnson.

School Transfer Deadline May 1

A new interpretation of the 1954 Emergency Drouth Feed Program may clear West Texas feed dealers of part of their debt to the government. Early or late deliveries were ruled illegal by auditors, but USDA officials and Rep. C. Four Brady High School Athletes Win College Scholarships

Brady High School reports four athletes received college scholarships. Tracy Byrd and Bobby Weise will attend the University of Houston, while Winston Beeker and Charlies Bode head to Texas Tech. Byrd and Weise visited Houston last weekend, papers mailed to Tech on Wednesday, with offers from Texas Oklahoma Louisiana schools. Byrd placed second in Class A state shot put and led his football team as receiver. Weise set a Class A discus record and led District 7- AA in basketball. Beoker earned regional third in shot put. Bode is a top hurdler at Texas Tech and earned the outstanding performance award at Brady Relays.

Willie Myers Looks to North Texas for Scholarship

Rochelle sprinter Willie Myers holds a North Texas State scholarship offer and plans to enroll. The Class B state mile champion clocked 4 31.1 to win the mile at the state meet in Austin, narrowly beating Jimmy Reeves of Weinert who had won the event three straight years.

Vogel Invites Riders To Jubilee Parade

Cowboys and cowgirls are invited to ride in the July Jubilee parade on July 2. Sheriff Luke Vogel, rider division chairman, asks riders to contact him with expected participation. Heavy Rain Helps Crops Across McCulloch County

A slow soaking rainfall from 1 to 3 inches drenched most of McCulloch County on Wednesday night through Thursday dawn. Officials, including W. K. Jacoby of the Soil Conservation Service, noted the rain aided crops and range land, with the heaviest falls near the Ford Ranch to Rochelle, and Brady reporting 1.9 inches locally.

Rochelle School Seeks Four Teachers for Next Year

Rochelle school officials plan for four teaching positions for the next academic year as spring term ends Friday. Superintendent C W Thompson cites openings for an assistant coach and a commercial teacher to replace staff moving to Millersview along with two elementary teachers replacing Mrs Gordie Dunn and Mrs James Langford. Report cards will be mailed to parents next week, and no bus routes will run.
