Who Owned Land Sheffield Lawyer And Ruffin Differ

A legal split arose this week among L V Ruffin B R Sheffield and Bascom Giles in the veterans land probes. Ruffin alleges land sold to the state in his name under the Veterans Land Program was actually owned by Sheffield and Giles. He seeks judgment against Sheffield and Giles while denying participation in any conspiracy.

Lions Charter Night Attended by Rochelle Members and Guests

The Rochelle Lions Club held Charter Night Monday with about 100 members and guests including representatives from Brady Melvin and Eden clubs. Rochelle High School students provided music while Eden’s John Harrod spoke. Nathan Curlee served as master of ceremonies under H. J. Moseley’s delegation as club president.

Former Voca Man Killed in Wreck

Homer Gene Yarborough 24 of San Angelo died from a skull fracture after a Saturday wreck on US 277 six miles north of Del Rio. He was born in Voca April 19 1930 and survived by Betty Gibbs Yarborough his wife, parents, siblings, and grandparents with services held at Wilkerson Funeral Home in Brady and burial at Rest Haven Cemetery.

Death ruled death by own action in Brady case

John Willard Harrison a 25 year old Brady man was found shot to death on the Voca highway. Justice of the Peace Joe Myrick ruled the death as self inflicted after notes left for his wife and Brady City Marshal were confirmed to be in his handwriting.

Brady Colt Wins in Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park

G R White plans Derby entry for Trim Destiny after the three year old colt powered to victory in the Arkansas Derby at Hot Springs Arkansas. Jockey L C Cook reported the horse eased clear as White and Brady fans watched race odds shrink from 1000 to 1 to 8 to 1. The Brady bred horse bred by King Ranch mare Trimlike out of Destiny also drew attention from observers nationwide ahead of the Kentucky Derby.

Houston Firm Low Bidder on County Highway Projects

Gaylord Construction Company of Houston was the low bidder last week on two McCulloch County highway resurfacing projects. The State Highway Department announced Gaylord bid $142,667 for paving the Brownwood highway from the courthouse in Brady to the Placid cutoff intersection and for paving U.S. 190 from Brady to Rochelle.

Brady High School previews Little Dog Laughed cast

The Brady High School senior play The Little Dog Laughed features a nine to ten cast with five men and five women plus five supporting players. Director Miss Lucille Welch says the production is well cast and promises humor and strong audience appeal in a single set showing. Details will appear in The Standard leading up to the April 15 performance.

Minister Arrives To Fill Vacancy At St Pauls Church

Forrest O Miller arrives from Santa Rosa California to become minister of St Pauls Episcopal Church in Brady. He succeeds Rev Davis Carter and starts April 1. Miller is 38 with four children and plans Episcopal ordination within three months. He and his wife will relocate from California with two older boys joining earlier.

Crop Losses Skyrocket as 22 Degree Freeze Hits Texas

The fifth day of spring brought a 22 degree freeze across Mc Culloch County and much of Texas damaging fruit vegetables and grain, with losses estimated over 50 million dollars. Orchards, gardens, and early row crops perished while livestock shows limited impact and smudge pots aimed to save peach crops in Gillespie County. Texas records for March 26 27 and 28 were broken with Dallas Fort Worth posting record low 23 degrees.

Overdue Parking Tickets Trigger Arrears Warrants

The police plan warrants for motorists with unpaid overtime parking tickets. One driver reportedly owes up to twenty tickets. Warrants go out Wednesday, but those who pay before then settle at one dollar per ticket, while late payers face higher penalties.
