Greenbug Population Watch For Small Grain Farmers
As temperatures rise, small grain growers should monitor greenbugs. At 40 to 80 degrees F, individual greenbugs reproduce rapidly, yielding two to eight nymphs daily. Populations can grow quickly within three days to a week, with wingless and winged forms present. All Texas greenbugs are females, giving birth to living young, and heavy stress or moisture shortage prompts winged dispersal to infestation sites.

Greenbug Population Tips for Small Grain Fields
Plants with good moisture withstand higher greenbug numbers. Economic losses begin at 200 to 400 greenbugs per linear foot in small grain fields with 4 to 8 inch tall plants. Beneficial insects lag below 65 F, making chemical control preferable early, with March and April sprays most effective per MP-2839 available at county extension offices.
