Government subsidies debate weighs price supports costs
A congressional hearing analyzes farm price supports and subsidies across the economy. Estimates show 18 years of price supports cost the government about 1.503 billion dollars, with per-person farm subsidies around 3 dollars yearly and national costs per person about 45 cents annually. The discussion compares farm subsidies to airline and shipping subsidies and calls for broader economic reforms to reduce tariffs, wages, and living costs.
